Timing Chain: Service and Repair

TIMING CHAIN REPLACEMENT

REMOVAL





1. Crankshaft pulley removal.
a. Remove crankshaft pulley bolts.
b. Remove crankshaft pulley to hub bolt.
c. Remove pulley.

2. Crankshaft pulley hub removal.
a. Install Tool J 24420-B on hub, turn puller screw and remove hub.





3. Crankcase front cover removal.
a. Remove Front cover bolts.
b. Remove front cover. If difficult to remove, use a rubber mallet to loosen cover.
c. Clean sealing surface on block and crankcase front cover.

4. Remove crankcase front cover oil seal. Push out with a large screwdriver.

NOTE: Take care not to damage the oil seal seat.





5. Timing chain, tensioner and camshaft sprocket removal.
a. Remove timing chain tensioner bolts.
b. Remove camshaft sprocket, timing chain and tensioner at the same time.
c. Remove camshaft position sensor.

NOTE: Timing chain tensioner is spring loaded and requires some care when installing.

INSTALLATION

NOTE: Be sure crankshaft sprocket is fully seated against crankshaft.

1. Timing chain, tensioner and camshaft sprocket installation.





a. While compressing spring, use a suitable tool (cotter pin, nail) and insert in hole (A) as shown.





b. Install tensioner and bolts, do not tighten.





c. Align crankshaft and camshaft timing marks with "tabs" on tensioner as shown.





d. Install camshaft sprocket and timing chain, be sure timing marks are aligned.
e. Tighten tensioner bolts to 24 N.m (18 lb. ft.). Camshaft sprocket bolt to 130 N.m (96 lb. ft.).
f. Remove tool used to hold tensioner spring compressed.

2. Crankcase front cover oil seal installation.

Tool Required: J 35468 Seal Centering Tool

a. Place oil seal on seat with the lip facing the engine.
b. Drive oil seal into the cover with tool J 35468.

3. Crankcase front cover installation.





a. Install front cover over dowel pins with new gasket.
b. Install front cover bolts, tighten bolts to 11 N.m (97 lb. in.).





4. Crankshaft pulley hub installation.

Tools Required: J 29113 Crankshaft Pulley Hub Installer.

a. Coat front cover oil seal contact area with engine oil.
b. Apply RTV sealer or equivalent to keyway in crankshaft.
c. Place crankshaft pulley hub in position over key on crankshaft.
d. Install crankshaft pulley hub as follows:
- Install tool J 29113 into crankshaft so that at least 6mm (0.250 in.) of thread is engaged.
- Pull pulley hub into position and remove tool from crankshaft. Be sure hub is seated against crankshaft.

5. Crankshaft pulley installation.
a. Install crankshaft pulley.
b. Install crankshaft pulley to hub bolts and tighten to 50 N.m (37 lb. ft.).
c. Install crankshaft pulley to crankshaft bolt and tighten to 105 N.m (77 lb. ft.).

NOTE: Keep crankshaft from turning with suitable tool.
