Timing Cover: Service and Repair

1. On models equipped with airbag system, refer to Technician Safety Information for system disarming and arming procedures.
2. Disconnect battery ground.
3. Remove lower cooling fan shroud, then the drive belt.
4. Remove crankshaft pulley bolts and hub bolt.
5. Remove crankshaft pulley and hub using tool No. J 2440-B, or equivalent.
6. Remove engine cooling fan pulley and belt tensioner/idler pulley.
7. Remove two front oil pan nuts and studs.
8. Remove starter, then loosen oil pan.
9. Remove front cover bolts and cover.
10. Carefully pry old seal from cover with flat blade screwdriver.
11. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Tool No. J 35468, or equivalent, must be used when installing front cover seal in order for seal not to be damaged during hub installation.
b. Remove all grease and old RTV from mating surfaces.
c. Coat new front seal with engine oil and install using tool No. J 35468, or equivalent, leaving installation tool on seal.
d. Apply 3/8 inch wide by 3/16 inch thick bead of RTV to oil pan and front cover mating surfaces.
12. On models equipped with airbag system, refer to Technician Safety Information for system disarming and arming procedures.
