Engine Control Module: Service and Repair

CAUTION: To prevent internal PCM damage, the ignition must be "OFF" when disconnecting or reconnecting power to the PCM (for example, battery cable, PCM pigtail, PCM fuse, jumper cables, etc.). The ignition should be "OFF' for at least 10 seconds before disconnecting power to the PCM.

Powertrain Control Module (PCM)
Service of the PCM should normally consist of either replacement of the PCM and re-programming of the EEPROM, or a KS module change.
Whenever the diagnostic procedures call for the PCM to be replaced, the PCM should be checked first to see if it is the correct part.

If it is, remove the KS module from the faulty PCM and install it in the new service PCM. The service PCM will not contain a KS module. Whenever a DTC P0325 is set, check the KS module for proper installation.

Important: When replacing the production PCM with a service PCM (controller), it is important to transfer the broadcast code and production PCM number to the service PCM label. DO NOT record on the PCM cover. This will allow positive identification of PCM parts throughout the service life of the vehicle.

3. PCM Retaining Bracket.

Remove or Disconnect
1. The negative battery cable from the battery.
2. PCM retainer attaching bolts (2).
3. PCM electrical connectors.
4. Slide PCM and retainer from PCM bracket.
5. Retainer from PCM.

IMPORTANT: Before removing KS module cover, carefully clean PCM housing of any debris that may cause damage to PCM circuitry.

Knock Sensor (KS) Module Cover:

6. KS module cover.

IMPORTANT: To prevent possible Electrostatic Discharge damage to the PCM or KS module, DO NOT touch the connector pins or soldered components on the circuit board and DO NOT remove the integrated circuit boards from the carrier.

Remove or Disconnect
1. New PCM from packaging and check the service number and check the service number is the same number. The service number should be the same or updated as the number of the faulty PCM.
2. KS module cover.

Install or Connect
1. KS module in KS module socket (refer to Figure 3A-8).
2. KS module cover (refer to Figure 3A-7).

Tighten The KS module cover screws to 2.8-3.2 Nm (25-28 in. lbs.).

3. Slide PCM into PCM retainer.
4. PCM electrical connectors.
5. Slide PCM retainer into PCM bracket slots.
6. PCM retainer attaching bolts (2).

Tighten The (2) PCM retainer attaching bolts to 8-12 Nm (6-9 ft. lbs.).
