General Description
The special tools required for service of the fuel and emission systems are illustrated in Figures 1 through 5. These tools will be needed in specialized procedures listed in other sections. The knowledge of the tool's abilities and limitations must be known before they are used. This knowledge should include, scan tool operation, proper use of test lights, use of jumper wires to bypass components for circuit tests and proper usage of a Digital Volt Ohmmeter (DVM).

Scan Tool
The control module system's Data Link Connector (DLC) under the dash near the steering column allows an easy link for connecting scan tools to the system. There are several scan tools available for reading this information.
Scan tools do not replace the use of diagnostic charts or even locate exactly where a problem is in a given circuit. However, with an understanding of the equipment and the circuit involved, the tools can be very useful in obtaining information which could be more time consuming than with other equipment.

NOTE: A scan tool that displays faulty data should not be used and the problem should be reported to the manufacturer. The use of a faulty scan tool can result in misdiagnosis and unnecessary replacement of good parts.

The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) tables incorporate diagnosis procedures using a DLC scan tool when possible.
Some control modules use three modes for transmitting information but some only read data in the open mode.

NOTE: Special service tools that are shown which have tool product numbers beginning with "J" or "BT" are available for worldwide distribution from:
