Replacement

REPLACEMENT

1. Drain the engine oil.
2. Turn the crankshaft so that the No. 1 piston is at top dead center.
3. Remove the timing belt and the timing balancer belt.
4. Remove the timing belt tensioner and the timing balancer belt tensioner.
5. Remove the timing balancer belt drive pulley.
6. Remove the Crankshaft Position/Top Dead Center (CKP/TDC) sensors, then remove the timing belt drive pulley.
7. Remove the timing belt drive pulley and the timing balancer belt driven pulley.
8. Remove the balancer gear case and the balancer driven gear.
9. Remove the oil pan and the oil screen.

10. Remove the mounting bolts and the oil pump assembly.
11. Remove the screws from the pump housing, then separate the housing and cover.
12. Inspect the pump for clearance.
15. Inspect both rotors and the pump housing for scoring or other damage. Replace parts if necessary.
16. Remove the old oil seals from the oil pump.

17. Using the special tool, gently tap in the new oil seals until the driver bottoms against the pump.

NOTE: By using the special tool, oil seals alone can be replaced without removing the oil pump.

18. Reassemble the oil pump, applying liquid thread lock to the pump housing screws.
19. Check that the oil pump turns freely.
20. Install a dowel pin and the new O-ring on the pump.

21. Apply liquid gasket to the oil pump and install it.

NOTE:
- Use liquid gasket, Part No. 08718 - 0001, or equivalent.
- Check that the mating surfaces are clean and dry before applying liquid gasket.
- Apply liquid gasket evenly, in a narrow bead centered on the mating surface.
- To prevent oil leakage, apply liquid gasket to the inner threads of the bolt holes.
- Do not install the parts if 5 minutes or more have elapsed since applying liquid gasket.
Instead, reapply liquid gasket after removing the old residue.
- After assembly, wait at least 20 minutes before filling the engine with oil.
- Apply grease to the lips of the crankshaft oil seal and the balancer shaft seal. Then, install the oil pump inner rotor onto the crankshaft. When the pump is in place, clean any excess grease off the crankshaft and the balancer shaft, then check that the oil seal lips are not distorted.

22. Install the oil screen.

23. Hold the front balancer shaft with a screwdriver, then install the timing balancer belt driven pulley.

24. Before installing the balancer driven gear and the balancer gear case, apply molybdenum disulfide to the thrust surfaces of the balancer gears, as shown.

25. Hold the rear balancer shaft with a 6 x 100 mm bolt, then install the balancer driven gear.

26. Install the balancer gear case on the oil pump.

NOTE: Align the groove on the pulley edge to the pointer on the gear case while holding the rear balancer with a 6 x 100 mm bolt, then install the gear case.

27. Check alignment of the pointers after installing gear case.

28. Apply liquid gasket on the oil pump and right side cover mating areas as shown below.

29. Install the oil pan gasket and oil pan.

NOTE:
- Use a new oil pan gasket.
- Install the oil pan no more than five minutes after applying liquid gasket.

30. Tighten nuts finger-tight at six points as shown below.
31. Tighten all bolts and nuts, starting from nut (1), clockwise in three steps to achieve a final torque of 14 Nm (10 ft. lbs.).

NOTE: Excessive tightening can cause distortion of the oil pan gasket, and oil leakage.
