Removal

WARNING:
- Make sure jacks and safety stands are placed properly and hoist brackets are attached to the correct positions on the engine.
- Make sure the car will not roll off stands and fall while you are working under it
.

CAUTION:
- Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surfaces.
- Unspecified items are common.
- Unplug the wiring connectors carefully while holding the connector portion to avoid damage.
- Mark all wiring and hoses to avoid misconnection. Also, be sure that they do not contact other wiring or hoses, or interfere with other parts.

1. Remove the hood.
2. Make sure you have the anti-theft code for the radio, then write down the frequencies for the radio's preset buttons.
3. Disconnect the battery negative terminal first, then the positive terminal.





4. Remove the battery, battery base, bracket and engine ground cable.





5. Remove the throttle cable and cruise control cable by loosening the locknuts, then slip the cable end out of the throttle linkage.

NOTE:
- Do not loosen the adjusting nut.
- Take care not to bend the cable while removing it. Always replace any kinked cable with a new one.
- Adjust the throttle cable after installation.





6. Remove the side branch clamp from the lower radiator hose, then remove the intake air duct.





7. Remove the battery cable from the under-hood fuse/ relay box and under-hood ABS fuse/relay box.





8. Disconnect the engine wire harness connectors on the right side of the engine compartment.





9. Remove the brake booster vacuum hose and evaporative emission (EVAP) control canister hose.
10. Relieve fuel pressure.

WARNING: Do not smoke while working on the fuel system. Keep open flame or spark away from the work area. Drain fuel only into an approved container.





11. Remove the fuel feed hose and fuel return hose.





12. Remove the vacuum hoses and power steering (P/S) hose clamp.
13. Disconnect the engine wire harness connectors, terminal and clamps on the left side of the engine compartment.





14. Disconnect the injector resistor connector on the left side of the engine compartment.





15. Remove the mounting nuts and adjusting bolt, then remove the P/S pump belt and pump.
- Do not disconnect the P/S hoses.





16. Remove the alternator mounting bolt, mounting nut, adjusting bolt, connector and alternator terminal, then remove the alternator belt and alternator.





17. Remove the alternator bracket.
18. Remove the radiator cap.

WARNING: Use care when removing the radiator cap to avoid scalding by hot coolant or steam.

19. Raise the hoist to full height.





20. Remove the front tires/wheels and the splash shield.
21. Drain the engine coolant.
22. Drain the transmission fluid. Reinstall the drain plug using a new washer.
23. Drain the engine oil. Reinstall the drain plug using a new washer.





24. Lower the hoist, then remove the upper and lower radiator hoses and the heater hoses.





25. Remove the automatic transmission fluid (ATF) cooler hoses.
26. Remove the radiator assembly.





27. Remove the air conditioning (A/C) compressor.
- Do not disconnect the A/C hoses.
28. Raise the hoist to full height.





29. Disconnect the primary heated oxygen sensor (Primary HO2S) connector, then remove exhaust pipe A.





30. Make a mark on the center beam and rear beam, then remove the two mount bolts.





31. Remove the shift cable.

NOTE:
- Take care not to bend the cable when removing it. Always replace any kinked cable with a new one.
- Adjust the shift cable after installation.

32. Remove the damper fork.





33. Disconnect the suspension lower arm ball joints with the special tool.





34. Remove the driveshafts.

CAUTION:
- Do not pull on the driveshaft, the CV joint may come apart.
- Use care when prying out the assembly. Pull it straight to avoid damaging the differential oil seal or intermediate shaft dust seal.





NOTE: Coat all precision-finished surfaces with clean engine oil. Tie plastic bags over the driveshaft ends.





35. Remove the front mount bracket.
36. Separate the stabilizer from the lower arms, then remove the lower arms from the rear beam.





37. Remove the front beam.
38. Lower the hoist.





39. Attach the chain hoist to the engine.





40. Separate the rear mount and bracket.





41. Remove the side engine mount.





42. Remove the transmission mount and bracket.
43. Check that the engine is completely free of vacuum hoses, fuel and engine coolant hoses and electrical wiring.
44. Slowly lower the engine approximately 150 mm (6 inch). Check once again that all hoses and wires are disconnected from the engine.
45. Lower the engine all the way, and remove it from the vehicle.
