Transmission Mode Switch: Service and Repair


WARNING: Make sure lifts, jacks and safety stands are placed properly.

1. Raise the front of the vehicle, and support it with safety stands.
2. Set the parking brake, and block both rear wheels securely.
3. Shift to N position.




4. Remove the A/T gear position switch connector from the connector bracket, then disconnect the A/T gear position switch connector.
5. Place a jack under the transmission, and raise the transmission just enough to take weight off the mount.




6. Remove the transmission mount.
7. Remove the jack from the transmission, and lower it.




8. Remove the harness clamp from the right side cover, then remove the A/T gear position switch cover and A/T gear position switch from the right side cover.




9. Set the A/T gear position switch to N position.

NOTE: The A/T gear position switch clicks in N position.




10. Set the control shaft to position, then install the A/T gear position switch on the control shaft.
11. Install the A/T gear position switch cover and harness clamp on the right side cover.
12. Raise the transmission with a jack.
13. Install the transmission mount. Tighten the bolt loosely and tighten the nuts to the specified torque, then tighten the bolt to the specified torque.
14. Remove the jack from the transmission.
15. Connect the A/T gear position switch connector, and install the connector to the connector bracket.




16. Turn the ignition switch ON. Move the shift lever through all gears, and check the A/T gear position switch synchronization with the A/T gear position indicator.
17. Start the engine. Move the shift lever through all gears, and verify the following:
- The shift lever cannot be moved to R position from N position without the shift lever pulled.
- The engine does not start with other than N and P positions.
- The back-up lights come on when the shift lever is in R position.
