1996 OASIS (VO) ABS INDICATOR LIGHT ILLUMINATION
(Supersedes SB96-09-L003)

This Service Bulletin supersedes SB96-09-L003, issued 7/96, to correct the labor operation number listed in the Fiat Rate Manual Update Information section. Please discard Service Bulletin SB96-09-L003.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

1996 Oasis (VO) models.

SERVICE INFORMATION

On some affected vehicles, the ABS indicator light may come on and the ABS control unit will then store a Code 1. The probable cause of this condition may be air trapped in the ABS pump inlet, which causes the pump to run for 40 seconds without building ABS pressure.

To correct this condition, follow the procedures in this Service Bulletin to bleed the air from the ABS and reset the ABS control unit.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

ABS AIR BLEEDING

INSPECTION

ABS Reservoir
^ Inspect brake fluid in reservoir and fill with clean, fresh DOT 3 hydraulic brake fluid to correct level, as necessary.

AIR BLEEDING

1. ABS Modulator Unit
^ A. Remove bleeder cap from maintenance bleeder.

^ B. Connect piece of clear plastic tubing to maintenance bleeder and insert other end of tubing into suitable container (Figure 1).

^ C. Relieve ABS pressure by loosening maintenance bleeder. Close bleeder when fluid stops flowing into plastic tubing.

^ D. Connect piece of 3/8-inch O.D. hose to pressure side of hand-held vacuum pump (Figure 2).

2. Modulator Unit Reservoir
^ A. Remove filler cap. Leave plastic insert in reservoir opening.

^ B. Hold vacuum pump hose against plastic insert in reservoir opening. Pressurize reservoir by pumping vacuum pump until resistance is felt (one to three strokes) (Figure 2).

3. ABS Modulator Unit
^ A. While maintaining pressure on reservoir, start engine. Allow ABS pump to build pressure in modulator unit.

^ B. Turn off engine, then slowly open maintenance bleeder. Close bleeder when brake fluid stops flowing through clear plastic tube.

^ C. Repeat steps 2B through 3B a total of five (5) times to purge air from modulator unit.

4. Modulator Unit Reservoir
^ Remove vacuum pump hose and install filler cap.

5. ABS Modulator Unit
^ Remove plastic tubing from maintenance bleeder.

RESETTING ABS CONTROL UNIT

Remove fuse B2 from the Under-Hood ABS Fuse/Relay Box. Wait for three (3) seconds minimum, then reinstall the fuse.
