1996-97 RODEO (UC) KEY DIFFICULT TO REMOVE FROM IGNITION SWITCH
AFFECTED VEHICLES
1996-97 Rodeo (UC) models equipped with automatic transmission.
SERVICE INFORMATION
Some affected vehicles may experience a condition in which the key cannot be removed from the ignition switch. This condition may occur even though the shift lock cable is properly adjusted and the transmission select lever is in "P" (Park).
The cause of this condition may be a faulty lock cylinder assembly in the steering column. The return spring retainer tab at the key barrel lock pin may come loose. If this occurs, the tab or the retainer spring could jam the transmission shift lock cable rod, preventing the key from being moved into the LOCK position and blocking the removal of the key.
To repair this condition, check whether the return spring retainer tab at the key barrel lock pin is missing or loose from its mounting. If the tab is missing or loose, replace the lock cylinder assembly with a new one (Part No. 8-97135-981-0). If the tab is intact, the most likely cause is a misadjusted shift lock cable.
This Service Bulletin provides detailed instructions for inspecting the lock cylinder assembly, and if required, replacing it with a new one or adjusting the shift lock cable.
