Column
NOTE:^ When the steering column is removed from the vehicle, a sharp blow on the end of the steering shaft or shift lever, leaning on the column assembly, or dropping of the assembly could shear or loosen the plastic fasteners that maintain column rigidity.
^ Do not rotate the steering shaft after steering column has been removed. Damage to SRS components may occur.
1. Remove the negative battery cable.
2. Disable the SRS.
3. Disconnect, then remove the transmission control linkage.
4. Remove the steering column bulkhead connector from the vehicle wire harness by loosening the center screw.
5. Loosen the nuts that retain the steering column to the steering column toe plate.
6. Loosen the nuts that retain the steering column to the steering column support bracket.
7. Remove the steering column from the vehicle.
8. After removing the old column, install the new steering column into the vehicle.
9. Tighten the nuts that retain the steering column to the steering column support bracket to 30 Nm (22 ft.lbs.).
10. Tighten the nuts that retain the steering column to the steering column toe plate to 30 Nm (22 ft lbs).
11. Attach the steering column bulkhead connector to the vehicle wire harness then tighten the screw to 6 Nm (53 inch lbs.).
12. Install the transmission control linkage (column-shift models only).
13. Enable the SRS.
14. Attach the negative battery cable.
