Ignition Lock Cylinder - Seized

1996-97 HOMBRE (TH) IGNITION LOCK CYLINDER SEIZED: NEW TUMBLERS For CYLINDER RECODING

AFFECTED VEHICLES

Some 1996-97 Hombre (TH) models.

SERVICE INFORMATION

Condition:

Ignition lock (key) cylinders will not rotate.

Possible Cause:

The tumbler of the ignition lock cylinder is seizing, due to an improper profile.

Correction:





Replace the original tumblers with new tumblers, which incorporates an improved profile. (Figure 1) Follow the procedures outlined below in addition to the Workshop Manual for recoding lock cylinders using the new tumblers.

SERVICE PROCEDURES

1. Remove the tilt lever, upper and lower column covers.





2. Drill hole in module housing as indicated in the illustration. (Figure 2)

^ Use a short drill bit (1/8" followed by 9/32") with a 90 degree drill motor or 90 degree drill attachment to break or access the retaining spring for the lock cylinder button.

3. Remove the retaining spring from the hole.

^ Use a pick or needle nose pliers.

4. Using pliers, grasp and remove the retaining button for the cylinder.

5. Remove the cylinder from the housing.

6. Follow the procedures in the appropriate Workshop Manual when recoding of the lock cylinder is required.

NOTE
When recoding the lock cylinder, the procedure in the Workshop Manual refers to the use of Kent-Moore available tool # J41340. This tool set is necessary during assembly and coding of lock cylinders.

7. Install the new cylinder and reinstall the steering column components.
