BODY

1997 HOMBRE (TH) SEAT BELT SEPARATION
SAFETY RECALL CAMPAIGN 97V-096

CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION NUMBER

Number 97V-096 has been assigned to this campaign. This number will appear on all communications and documentation of any nature dealing with the campaign.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

1997 Hombre (TH) extended cab models within VIN range V8650200 to V8660947, equipped with 60/40 split bench seat.

NOTE
Safety Recall Campaign 97V-146, 1997 Hombre (TH) Front Brake Pipe Inspection, involves some of the same vehicles affected by this campaign. To ensure a First Visit Fix, and customer satisfaction, when repairing an affected vehicle for this campaign, check the affected VINs in Attachment A of Campaign Bulletin SB97-09-L004, to determine whether that vehicle is also subject to the repair for Safety Recall Campaign 97V-146. If so, be sure to include the repairs for Safety Recall Campaign 97V-146.

SERVICE INFORMATION

Condition:
Some affected vehicles may experience a condition in which the driver's and/or front passenger's outboard seat belt webbing could separate during a frontal impact having at least the same dynamics as a 30 mph frontal barrier collision. Although the restraint system meets all the Motor Vehicle Safety Standards requirements with the separation condition, if a separation occurred, and there were secondary crash events or a rollover, there would be no seat belt restraint of the driver and/or front passenger, and increased injuries could occur.

Possible Cause:
No protector cover on the seatback recliner assembly In a vehicle impact situation, the seat belt moves forward and down. As this movement occurs, the lower edge of the seat belt slides along the upper edge of the seatback recliner assembly, which is sharp enough to cut the seat belt.

Correction:
To prevent this condition from occurring, Isuzu dealers will install a plastic protector cover onto the seatback recliner assembly of both the driver and front passenger seat, using a Cushion Pad Protector Kit (Part No. 8-88880-006-0).

DEALER RESPONSIBILITY

Isuzu dealers are required to service all affected vehicles at no charge to the owner, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership.

Whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign is in a dealer's vehicle inventory, or arrives at a dealership for service, the dealer, must take the necessary steps to ensure that this campaign correction has been made before selling or releasing the vehicle.

Each Isuzu dealer will be supplied a copy of the AIMI Campaign Report (AWS 123-1A) listing affected vehicles between the specified VIN range in dealer inventory and retailed status. All unsold new vehicles in dealer's possession and subject to this campaign must be held and repaired per the service procedure in this Campaign Bulletin before customers take possession of their vehicles. The report contains VIN and detailed owner information obtained from state motor vehicle registration records. The use of such motor vehicle registration data for any other purpose is a violation of law in several states. Accordingly, dealers are urged to limit the use of this listing to the follow-up necessary to complete this campaign. If none of the affected vehicles are assigned to a dealership, no campaign report will be sent.

OWNER NOTIFICATION

American Isuzu Motors Inc. (AIMI) will send a notification letter to owners of affected vehicles already retailed (see enclosed copy). Dealers should follow up with vehicle owners by sending a Campaign Reminder Notice (AIMI SVCF-1052) to all vehicle owners listed in the AIMI Campaign Report AWS 123-1A. Dealers may obtain these postcards from their Regional Office.

INSTALLING THE CUSHION PAD PROTECTOR KIT

1. Slide the seat portion (driver or passenger side) all the way forward.

2. Move the seatback to its full upright position.

3. Unfasten the J-strip located on the seat bottom seat trim and remove the plastic fastener securing the side skirt seat trim.

IMPORTANT!
Don't remove tile recliner handle.

4. Move the seatback to its fully reclined position.

5. Pull the seat trim back to expose the seatback recliner assembly. Note the predrilled hole in the upper front portion of the assembly (Figure 1).

6. From the Cushion Pad Protector Kit (Part No. 8-88880-006-0) mount the plastic protector cover onto the seatback recliner assembly so that both the top and rear portion of the seatback recliner assembly are covered by the plastic protector cover and the mounting screw hole in the plastic protector cover is aligned with the pre-drilled hole in the seatback recliner assembly (Figure 2). Insert the mounting screw, supplied from the kit, into the mounting hole in the plastic protector cover and tighten the mounting screw until the plastic protector cover is securely attached to the seatback recliner assembly (Figure 3).

IMPORTANT!
The edge of the plastic protector cover must be seated on both the upper and rear surface of the seat back recliner assembly.

7. Install the side skirt seat trim with the new plastic fastener, supplied from the kit, and fasten the 4-strip onto the seat bottom seat trim.

8. Repeat the above steps for the remaining seat portion.
