AFFECTED VEHICLES

1996-97 Rodeo (UC) and 1996-97 Hombre (TH) models.

Certain Workshop Manual diagnostic procedures on the enhanced evaporative emission control system in affected vehicles require the usage of special tools in order to perform the procedures properly.

If a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is set that requires leak testing of the enhanced evaporative emission control system, the following Kent-Moore special tools, or their equivalent, are recommended:

J41413 EVAP Pressure/Purge Diagnostic Station

This multipurpose special tool (Figure 1) performs several diagnostic procedures for enhanced emission testing. The station will accomodate a nitrogen-filled cylinder for pressurizing the vehicle EVAP system for a leakdown test when the vehicle is repaired for leakage in the enhanced evaporative emission control system. The station also has two additional gauges (i.e., inches of mercury and inches of water) for measuring both source vacuum and EVAP canister purge vacuum to verify correct operation and vapor flow within the canister purge circuit. THIS SPECIAL TOOL DOES NOT INCLUDE THE NITROGEN-FILLED CYLINDER.

J41416 Ultrasonic Leak Detector

This microprocessor-based special tool (Figure 2) detects leaks in the enhanced evaporative emission control system. The EVAP system is pressurized to 30 inches of water using J41413 EVAP Pressure/Purge Diagnostic Station. Small leaks in the EVAP system will emit high-frequency sound waves, undetectable to the human ear, hut detectable with this special tool. Use this special tool to pinpoint leaks in the EVAP system due to corroded lines, cracked hoses, or a damaged EVAP component.

This special tool includes a set of high quality headphones, which block out surrounding shop noises and an LED sensitivity meter, which provides a visual reference for the audio output heard through the headphones. The J41416 Ultrasonic Leak Detector is powered by a single 9-volt battery.

If you do not have these special tools or their equivalent, they may be ordered directly from Kent-Moore by calling 1-800-345-2233.
