Parking Brake System: Description and Operation

Parking Brake Rear Cable:

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The parking brake is an integral drum-in-disc type. The rear wheel parking brake assembly is a duoservo brake (mechanical inside expansion type) built in the rear disc brake. Parking brake adjustment is made through the adjusting hole (through back plate).

LEVER AND CABLE
Pulling up the parking brake lever by hand will set the parking brake. By means of a ratchet type lock, the lever is held in that position until released. The lever pulls on the front cable which then pulls on the pair of rear cables, actuating the parking brake at each rear wheel. The assembly is designed to provide sufficient braking force to hold the vehicle in place, even when parking on slopes.

PARKING BRAKE SWITCH - BRAKE WARNING LIGHT
A switch under the parking brake lever provides a ground path for the brake warning lamp whenever the parking brake is applied, to notify the vehicle operator in case the parking brake is not fully released. When the ignition switch is in the "ON" position with the engine not running, the brake warning light illuminates. If the parking brake is set, or if there is a brake hydraulic system problem, the brake warning light will remain illuminated after the engine is started. For more information on the brake warning lamp, refer to Instrument Panel, Gauges and Warning Indicators.

Parking Brakes Operation:

OPERATION
When pulled in the direction "A", the parking lever presses the secondary shoe against the brake drum using the Ever/shoe joint"B" as a fulcrum and pushes the strut in the direction "C". The strut, in turn, presses the primary shoe against the brake drum. Counter force "D" to the primary shoe is transmitted again to the secondary shoe through the fulcrum "B". The secondary shoe contacts the drum and rotor united in a body, thereby producing braking effect. Clearance which may result from worn parking brake shoe lining can be adjusted by turning the adjusting screw notches by hand.
