Scan Tool Connecting

In order to access OBD II Powertrain Control Module ([1][2]PCM) data, use of the TECH 1 scan tool is required.

1. The electronic diagnosis equipment is composed of:

a. TECH 1 (J-38770-1) hand-held scan tool.
b. TECH 1 self-test adapter.
c. Manufacturer's operating instructions.

2. Transmission cartridge.
The cartridge (No. 7000066) must be inserted into the TECH 1 for the 4L30-E transmission diagnosis.

3. Connecting the TECH 1.
For the TECH 1 to interpret the Class 2 Data Bus used by OBD II, it is necessary to use the TECH 1 application kit part #7000041 or #7000041 A.

Kit part No. 7000041:
* 3000091 - OBD II VIM
* 3000086 - 14/12 PIN VIM DLC ADAPTER
* 3000081 - 16/24 PIN VIM DLC CABLE
* 5000058 - VIM MANUAL

Kit part No. 7000041 A:
* Kit 7000041 + CABLE (TA-11-B)

a. Always observe the instructions in the TECH 1 and Transmission Cartridge Operator's Manual.
b. Make sure the vehicle ignition is "OFF".

c. Install the VIM and 16/24 PIN VIM DLC ADAPTER CABLE between the TECH 1 and PCM Data Link Connector (DLC, C-63).

NOTE: The TECH 1 Series A is powered through the DLC, and does not need to be plugged into the cigarette lighter. The Series A also must not be used with the 14/12 PIN VIM adapter #3000086. Also, when using the TECH 1 Series A, remove the 12/14 PIN adapter (P/N TA01140) from the Series A data connector cable.

4. DVOM.
When instructed to use a voltmeter or ohmmeter within a troubleshooting procedure, use only a high-impedance DVOM (Digital Volt Ohm Meter) such as J-39200 or equivalent.
