Removal

TOOLS REQUIRED
^ J-39207 Clutch Release Bearing Remover
^ Or Equivalent

PREPARATION:
^ Remove engine hood.
^ Disconnect battery negative ( - ) cable.





REMOVAL
1. Transfer protector. Remove the transfer protector.
2. Exhaust pipe and heat protector:





a. Disconnect four oxygen sensor connectors from the transmission harness.
b. Remove the right front exhaust pipe and catalytic converter assembly.
c. Remove the harness heat protector.





3. Slave cylinder, heat protector, dust cover (1) and (2):
a. Remove the heat protector.
b. Remove the slave cylinder.
c. Remove the dust cover (1) and (2).





4. Rear propeller shaft. Remove the rear propeller shaft.

NOTE: Apply alignment marks on the flange at the both front and rear side.

5. Transmission harness connectors:
a. Disconnect the reverse lamp switch, 4WD indicator switch, 1-2 and 3-4 indicator switch harness connectors.





b. Disconnect the speed sensor harness connector.





c. Remove two transmission harness clamps from the transmission case and bracket.
6. Engine rear mount nuts:
a. Support the transfer case with a jack.





b. Remove two engine rear mount nuts.
7. Center crossmember. Remove eight center crossmember bolts.
8. Engine rear mount:
a. Remove two engine rear mount bolts.
b. Remove the rear mount from the transmission
9. Front crossmember:
a. Remove four front crossmember bolts.





b. Remove the front crossmember from the frame.





10. Front propeller shaft. Remove the front propeller shaft.

NOTE: Apply alignment marks on the flange at both the front and rear sides.





11. Gear control lever:
a. Remove the gear control lever knob.
b. Remove the front console assembly.
c. Remove the grommet assembly.
d. Remove the transmission control lever and transfer control lever.





e. Support the transmission with a transmission jack and then remove jack from the transfer case side.
12. Flywheel under cover bolts. Remove three flywheel under cover bolts.





13. Transmission assembly. Use the remover for disconnect the clutch release bearing from the clutch pressure plate. Remove the transmission retaining nuts and bolts. Remove the transmission from the vehicle.
- Clutch release bearing remover: J-39207.








RELEASE BEARING DISCONNECTION
1. Pull the shift fork toward the transmission to press the clutch release bearing against the clutch.
2. Insert the clutch release bearing remover between the wedge collar and the release bearing.
3. Turn the remover to separate the release bearing.

NOTE: Be sure not to insert the remover between the wedge collar and the clutch.
