SERVICE PROCEDURE

* Disabling the SRS

1. Record any radio presets.
2. Turn the ignition switch to "OFF".
3. Disconnect the battery (-) cable.

* REMOVAL
1. Unfasten the air bag assembly from the steering wheel by removing two bolts.
2. Lift the airbag partway out of the steering wheel.
3. Disconnect the 2-pin yellow SRS connector and the 1-pin green horn lead-connector to remove the air bag.
4. Remove the steering wheel fixing nut.
5. Turn the steering wheel so that the vehicle's wheels are pointing straight ahead.
6. Apply a setting mark across the steering wheel and shaft so that the steering wheel may be reinstalled in the original position.
7. Remove the steering wheel using essential tool J-29752.

IMPORTANT Never apply force to the steering wheel in the direction of the shaft by using a hammer or other impact tools in an attempt to remove the steering wheel. The steering shaft is designed as an energy-absorbing unit.

8. Remove the steering lower cover.
9. Remove the driver knee bolster assembly.
10. Remove the steering column cover.
11. Remove the lower air conditioning duct.
12. Disconnect the (I-13) 2-pin yellow SRS connector from the base of the steering column.
13. Remove the (Solid Green) horn lead-pin from terminal # 12 of the black (I-32) combination switch connector at the base of the steering column.

- Remove the (white) locking tab. (Figure 1)

- Insert pin extractor to release pin from terminal # 12. (Figure 2)
- Remove (Solid Green) wire and lead-pin from (I-32) connector.

14. Remove the SRS coil assembly from the combination switch assembly by removing four (4) screws. (Figure 3)

* INSTALLATION

1. Fasten the new SRS Coil assembly to the combination switch assembly with the four (4) screws. (Figure 4)

NOTE The "tangs" of the cancel cam must fit into the recessed portion of the SRS "hub".

2. Insert the green horn lead-pin into terminal # 12 of the black (I-32) combination switch connector at the base of the steering column. (Figure 5)

- Reinsert the (White) locking tab to the connector. (Figure 6)
- Wrap this connector with vinyl tape as originally applied.

3. Connect the (I-13) 2-pin yellow SRS connector at the base of the steering column.
4. Bundle the harnesses of the combination switch and the SRS coil assembly together with vinyl tape at midpoint.
5. Reinstall the lower air conditioning duct.
6. Reinstall the steering column cover.
7. Reinstall the driver knee bolster assembly.
8. Reinstall the steering lower cover.
9. Set and align the SRS coil to "neutral" position.

- Make sure the front wheels are pointing straight ahead.

- Slowly rotate the coil fully clockwise, then turn it counter-clockwise (3) three turns. (Figure 7)

IMPORTANT When turning the SRS coil clock wise to full stop turning if resistance is felt. Forcing the coil to turn further may damage the cable in the SRS coil.

- Align the two neutral markers together. (Figure 8)

10. Align and install the steering wheel to the setting mark.
11. Tighten the steering wheel fixing nut to the specified torque.

- Torque: 34 Nm (25 ft lb)

12. Reconnect the 2-pin yellow SRS connector and the 1-pin green horn lead-connector to the air bag.

NOTE Pass the lead wire through the tabs on the plastic cover (wire protector) of air bag to prevent lead wire from being pinched.

13. Install the air bag into the steering wheel and tighten the two bolts.

- Torque: 8.8 Nm (78 in lb)

* ENABLING THE SRS/FINAL INSPECTION
1. Reconnect the battery (-) cable.
2. Turn the ignition switch to "ON" and verify that the "AIR BAG" warning lamp flashes seven times before turning off.
3. Check the horn operation.
4. Reprogram radio presets and reset clock.
