Standard Column
Tools Required: J 41352 Modular Column Holding Fixture.Standard Steering Column:
Remove or Disconnect
1. Negative (-) battery cable.
2. Disable the SRS; refer to DISABLING THE SRS. Refer to Arming/Disarming the SRS System. Technician Safety Information
NOTICE: Once steering column is removed from vehicle, the column is extremely susceptible to damage. Refer to Steering Column Removal. Technician Safety Information
3. Lower or remove steering column from vehicle.
- Secure steering column to modular column. holding fixture J 41352.
Modular Column Holding Fixture:
- Place holding fixture into vise.
Inspect
Steering shaft assembly for accident damage. Refer to Checking For Accident Damage. Testing and Inspection
4. Two pan head tapping screws (13) from lower shroud (28).
5. Lower shroud (28).
- Tilt shroud (28) down and slide back to disengage locking tabs.
6. Two torx head screws (14) from upper shroud (10).
Removing Upper Shroud:
7. Remove the upper shroud (10).
8. Shift lever.
9. Shift lever seal (16).
Install or Connect
NOTICE: Refer to the fastener precautions NOTICE. Technician Safety Information Failure not to do so may result in component damage or malfunction of steering column.
1. Shift lever seal (16).
2. Shift lever.
3. Move shift lever seal (16) and multi-function lever to ease in installation of upper and lower shrouds.
Installing Upper Shroud:
4. Install the upper shroud (10).
5. Two torx head screws (14) to upper shroud (10). Tighten screws (14) to 1.5 N.m (13 lb.in.).
6. Lower shroud (28).
- Ensure that slots on lower shroud (28) engage with tabs on upper shroud (10).
- Tilt lower shroud up and snap shrouds together.
7. Two pan head tapping screws (13) to lower shroud (28). Tighten screws (13) to 3.5 N.m (31 lb.in.).
8. Install the lock cylinder set.
9. Shift lever seal (16) and multi-function lever seal into position.
10. Raise or install steering column to vehicle.
11. If all service operations are completed, enable the SRS; refer to "ENABLING THE SRS". Refer to Arming/Disarming the SRS System. Technician Safety Information
12. Negative (-) battery cable.
