CAUTION: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions. Vehicle Damage Warnings
1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
2. Remove the hood.
Refer to Hood Replacement.
3. If the vehicle is equipped with a manual transmission, remove the shift lever.
Refer to Shift Lever Replacement in Transmission/Transaxle.
4. Disconnect the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold.
Refer to General Exhaust System Replacement.
5. Disconnect the catalytic converter from the exhaust pipe.
Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement.
6. Remove the brace rods from the engine and the transmission, manual transmission only.
Refer to Transmission Replacement in Transmission/Transaxle.
7. Remove the starter motor.
Refer to Starter Motor Replacement.
8. Remove the transmission.
Refer to Transmission Replacement in Transmission/Transaxle.
9. Disconnect the oxygen sensor electrical connector.
Refer to 02S Replacement.
10. Remove the generator rear brace using the following procedure:
10.1. Remove the bolt from the rear of the generator.
10.2. Remove two nuts holding the brace to the engine.
10.3. Remove the brace from the engine.
11. Disconnect the ground straps from the engine block.
Refer to Ground Strap Replacement
12. Remove the drive belt.
Refer to Drive Belt Replacement.
IMPORTANT: Do not evacuate the A/C system.
13. Remove the air conditioning compressor, if equipped.
Refer to Compressor Replacement in HVAC.
14. Remove the air intake duct.
Refer to Air Cleaner Intake Duct Replacement.
15. Remove the radiator.
Refer to Radiator Replacement
16. Remove the power steering pump and set it aside.
Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement in Steering.
17. Disconnect both heater hoses from the heater core.
Refer to Heater Hose Replacement in HVAC.
18. Disconnect the vacuum hoses.
19. Disconnect the accelerator cable and the cruise control cable, if equipped.
Refer to Accelerator Controls Cable Replacement.
20. Remove the EGR pipe from the engine.
21. Remove the EGR valve from the EGR adapter.
Refer to EGR Valve Replacement.
22. Disconnect the battery positive cable from the battery.
23. Disconnect the 12 volt supply from the mega fuse. Leave the cable on the engine.
24. Remove the bolt for the rear wiring harness bracket from the intake manifold.
25. Disconnect the following electrical connectors from the top of the engine:
- Fuel injector harness
- Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor
- Idle Air Control (IAC) motor
- Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor
- Throttle Position (TP) sensor
26. Disconnect the following electrical connectors from the left side of the engine:
- Oxygen (O2) sensor
- Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor
- Ignition Control Module (ICM)
- Purge canister solenoid
- Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor
- Knock (KS) Sensor
27. Disconnect the engine block heater, if equipped.
28. Disconnect the electrical connector from the generator.
29. Disconnect the generator output wire from the generator.
30. Disconnect the fuel pipes.

31. Install an approved engine lifting device to the engine lift brackets.
32. Remove the left side engine mount through-bolt.
33. Remove the right side engine mount through-bolt.
34. Remove the engine from the vehicle.
