Wheel Hub: Service and Repair

REMOVAL PROCEDURE
Tools Required
J 24319-B or equivalent Tie Rod End Puller
J 36607 or equivalent Ball Joint Separator

1. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle with safety stands.
2. Unload the torsion bar.
3. Remove the tire and the wheel.





4. Remove the drive axle nut.





5. Insert a drift or a large screwdriver through the brake caliper and into the rotor vanes. This prevents the rotor from turning.
6. Remove the washer.

NOTICE: Support the caliper with a piece of wire to prevent damage to the brake line.

7. Remove the brake caliper.





8. Remove the hub and bearing assembly from the axle joint splined shaft.
9. Remove the rotor.

IMPORTANT: Lay the hub and bearing assembly on the hub bolt on the outboard side. This prevents damage or contamination to the bearing seal.





10. Remove the bolts.
11. Remove the splash shield.





12. Remove the cotter pin.
13. Remove the nut.
14. Remove the tie rod end from the knuckle using the J24319-B or equivalent.
15. Remove the cotter pins.





16. Remove the ball joints from the knuckle using the J 36607 or equivalent. Locate the J 36607 or equivalent on the ball stud. Back off the nut until the ball stud is forced out of the knuckle.
17. Remove the nuts.
18. Remove the knuckle from the ball joints.
19. Remove the spacer from the knuckle.
20. Remove the seal from the knuckle.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
Tools Required
J28574 Steering Knuckle Seal Installer








1. Install the new seal to the knuckle using the J28574.
2. Install the spacer to the knuckle.
3. Install the knuckle to the upper and lower ball joints.
4. Install the nuts.
Tighten
- Tighten the nuts to align the cotter pin. Do not tighten the nuts more than 1/6 turn.
- Tighten the upper nut to 83 Nm (61 ft. lbs.).
- Tighten the lower nut to 108 Nm (79 ft. lbs.).
5. Install new cotter pins. Bend the pin ends against the nut flats.
6. Install the splash shield. Align the shield to the knuckle.
7. Install the hub and bearing assembly. Align the threaded holes.
8. Install the bolts.

Tighten
- Tighten the bolts to 105 Nm (77 ft. lbs.).

9. Install the tie rod end to the knuckle.
10. Install the nut.

Tighten
- Tighten the nut to 53 Nm (39 ft. lbs.).

11. Install a new cotter pin. Bend the pin ends against the nut flats.
12. Install the rotor.
13. Install the brake caliper.
14. Install the washer.
15. Install the nut.





16. Insert a drift or a large screwdriver through the brake caliper into the rotor vanes. This prevents the rotor from turning.

Tighten
- Tighten the drive axle nut to 140 Nm (103 ft. lbs.).

17. Install the tire and the wheel.
18. Lower the vehicle.
19. Apply the brake pedal.
20. Check the vehicle trim height. Align the front wheels.
