Load Compensator: Testing and Inspection

CAUTION: Before adjusting the load sensing proportioning valve, make sure the suspension is not modified.

Measure the Load Sensing Proportioning Valve (LSPV) spring length (dimension L in the figures below) if any of the following situations are encountered.
Adjust dimension L if the measurement is outside of the specification.

^ When the LSPV has been replaced or removed and reinstalled.
^ When a suspension component that affects the vehicle height was replaced or removed and reinstalled:
- Rear lower arm
- Rear upper arm
- Rear damper
- Rear coil spring
- Rear stabilizer

NOTE: If the vehicle was involved in an accident, check the frame (rear beam, floor, etc.) for damage. If the frame was straightened, make sure that it was restored to its original dimensions before measuring dimension L.

^ When there appears to be a problem with the brake system:
- Poor brake performance
- Rear wheels tend to lock up (without ABS)

- Test-drive the vehicle to verify the symptom, and check for:
- air in the brake lines
- brake fluid leakage
- proper brake pads
- suspension damage or modifications

If these items are normal, perform steps 1 through 3, and measure dimension L.
- If the measurement is outside of the specifications, adjust it.
- If the measurement is within the specification, replace the LSPV.

1. Before measuring, make sure:
- the vehicle is unloaded (except the spare tire and tools)
- the vehicle is unoccupied
- the brakes are not applied
- you check and record the fuel level
- you note the vehicle trim level

2. Insert a 5.0 - 5.3 mm straight pin into the 5 mm hole in the LSPV arm.

Measuring Dimension L:

3. While pulling the lever toward the spring, measure between the outer surface of the pin and the outer surface of the 8 mm adjusting bolt. Use the nut-side of the adjusting bolt, and keep the calipers parallel to the spring.

4. If the measurement is outside the specification, loosen the 8 mm flange nut, and adjust the spring's dimension L according to the table below.

NOTE: If the fuel level of the vehicle is not at FULL, compensate dimension L according to the fuel level.

Example:
Type: LX, 7-passenger
Fuel level: 1/2

The table shows that dimension L of fully-fueled 7-passenger LX 7 is 132 mm (5.197 inch). However, because the fuel level is 1/2, dimension L should be compensated by 2 mm.
Therefore, it should be adjusted at 130 mm (5.118 inch).

NOTE: If the vehicle is equipped with a trailer hitch, add 3 mm to dimension L before compensating for the fuel level.

5. After adjustment, test-drive the vehicle to check for proper brake system operation.
