REMOVAL

WARNING:
^ Make sure the lifts, jacks and safety stands are placed properly, and hoist brackets are attached to correct positions on the engine and the transmission.
^ Apply parking brake, and block rear wheels so the vehicle will not roll off stands and fall on you while working under it.

CAUTION: Use fender covers to avoid painted surfaces.

1. Before disconnecting the power, make sure you have the anti-theft code for radio, then write down the frequencies for the radio's preset buttons.
2. Disconnect the battery negative terminal, then remove the positive terminal.
3. Remove the battery hold-down bracket, then remove the battery and battery tray.
4. Remove the battery cable clamps from the batter base.
5. Remove the battery base.
6. Remove the intake air duct and air cleaner housing assembly.

7. Raise the vehicle, and make sure it is securely supported. Remove the drain plug, and drain the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF). Reinstall the drain plug with a new sealing washer.

8. Remove the starter cables and harness clamps, and remove the breather tube and radiator hose from the clamps.

9. Remove the transmission ground cable terminal, and disconnect the connectors from the A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve A/B assembly, mainshaft speed sensor, and 3rd clutch pressure switch, then remove the harness clamps from the clamp brackets.

NOTE: Do not allow water, fluid, oil, dust, or other foreign particles to get inside the 3rd clutch pressure switch connector.

10. Disconnect the lock-up control solenoid valve/shift control solenoid valve A assembly connector.
11. Remove the ATF cooler hoses from the ATF cooler lines. Turn the ends of the ATF cooler hoses up to prevent ATF from flowing out, then plug the ATF cooler hoses and lines.

NOTE: Check for any signs of leakage at the hose joints.

12. Disconnect the shift control solenoid valve B connector, and C connector, then remove the harness clamp from the clamp bracket.
13. Disconnect the countershaft speed sensor connector, and remove the harness clamp from the clamp bracket.

14. Remove the A/T gear position switch connector from the connector bracket, then disconnect it.

15. Disconnect the 2nd clutch pressure switch connector.

NOTE: Do not allow water, fluid, oil, dust, or other foreign particles to get inside the connector.

16. Remove the transmission housing mounting bolts.

17. Loosen the front mount bracket bolts.

18. Remove the splash shield.

19. Remove the center beam.

20. Remove the cotter pins and castle nuts, then separate the ball joints from the lower arms.
21. Pry the driveshafts out of the differential and intermediate shaft.
22. Pull on the inboard joint to remove the right driveshaft from the differential and the left driveshaft from the intermediate shaft.

23. Coat all precision finished surfaces with clean engine oil, then tie plastic bags over the driveshaft ends.
24. Remove the right damper pinch bolt, then separate the damper fork and damper.

25. Remove the bolts securing the radius rod, then separate the right radius rod from the lower arm.
26. Turn the right driveshaft toward the front of the vehicle.

27. Remove the intermediate shaft. Coat all precision finished surfaces with clean engine oil, then tie plastic bags over both ends.
28. Remove the engine stiffener.
29. Remove the bolts securing the shift cable holder, then remove the shift cable cover,

NOTE: To prevent damage to the control lever joint, remove the bolts securing the shift cable holder before removing the bolts securing the shift cable cover.

30. Remove the lock bolt securing the control lever, then remove the shift cable with control lever. Do not bend the shift cable excessively.

31. Remove the eight drive plate bolts one at a time while rotating the crankshaft pulley.
32. Place a jack under the transmission.

33. Remove the nuts securing the transmission mount, and remove the stud bolt, then remove the transmission mount.
34. Remove the bolts securing the intake manifold bracket.

35. Remove the rear mount/bracket bolts.
36. Pull the transmission away from the engine until it clears the dowel pins, then lower it on the transmission jack.
37. Remove the torque converter assembly.

38. Remove the starter from the torque converter housing.
