Door Mirror - Cracked/Replacement Kit Installation

1998 RODEO (UE) DOOR MIRROR CRACKED: REPLACEMENT KIT INSTALLATION

AFFECTED VEHICLES

All 1998 Rodeo (UE) models manufactured prior to May 7,1998.

SERVICE INFORMATION

Condition:
The door mirror(s) have cracked after the rear window/door mirror defogger switch was turned on.

Possible Cause:
The heating element of the outside mirror defogger may not be distributing heat evenly across the mirror.

Correction:
Replace the cracked mirror(s) using the Outside Mirror Repair Kit following the procedures outlined below.

PARTS INFORMATION





^ Replace cracked mirrors only.
^ Kit includes: mirror glass w/heater sub-assembly, mirror glass holder, and lubricant grease.

WARRANTY INFORMATION





Use the new labor operation.
Labor Time includes administrative time allowance.



SERVICE PROCEDURE





1. Heat surrounding edges of the door mirror glass with a heat gun to soften the mirror holder. (Figure 1)

NOTE
Do not overheat the painted surface.





2. Carefully remove the mirror glass from its holder, using a plastic Bondo spreader or equivalent. (Figure 2)





3. Disconnect the connections to the heating element from the mirror glass. (Figure 3)





4. Remove the center screw of mirror holder and remove the holder. (Figure 4)





5. Remove the two (2) pivot struts of the old holder, and install to new holder with grease. (Figure 5)

NOTE
For steps 5 and 6, use the grease that is supplied with the repair kit.





6. Remove the center ball-socket of the old holder, and install to new holder with grease. (Figure 6)





7. Route the heating element connections through cutout of the new holder, push to snap the pivot struts in place, and install the holder with the old screw. (Figure 7)

8. Heat the surrounding edge of the new holder to make the edge flexible.





9. Connect the heating element of the new mirror glass and remove the backing of the double-sided tapes on the holder. (Figure 8)





10. Install the new mirror glass to the new holder. Reheat the holder if necessary. (Figure 9)
