1998/99 RODEO (UE) TAILGATE LOCK CYLINDER ASSEMBLY REPAIR

AFFECTED VEHICLES

1998/99 Rodeo (UE) models

SERVICE INFORMATION

Condition:
On some affected vehicles, improper unlocking action of the tailgate lock button when using the key may cause the button to be inoperative, preventing the tailgate from being unlocked and opened. The tailgate button does not spring out when depressed, and the key does not unlock the tailgate cylinder.

Possible Cause:
Vehicles with an inoperative tailgate lock button may be the result of turning the key while the lock button is depressed, in an attempt to unlock. This action may have caused the plastic positioning tabs inside the lock cylinder core to deform, preventing the proper function of the lock cylinder. According to the Owner's Manual, the operator has to turn the key to the unlock position before pushing the tailgate lock button to open the hatch glass.

Correction:
Follow the special procedures outlined in this bulletin to open the tailgate to gain access to interior panel and repair the cylinder core using the updated parts. In addition, Kent-Moore essential tool J-44488 Lock Cylinder Crimping Tool set will be required for this repair.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Insert the key of the vehicle into the inoperative tailgate lock button and push-in until the button is nearly flush with the body panel. (Figure 1 and 2)

2. While the key is pushed in, turn the key counter-clockwise with medium pressure. (Figure 3) A clicking sound can be heard and felt when the plastic tabs and cylinder lock assembly realigns internally. At this time, the button should spring back out as normal. (Figure 4)

3. Once the button has sprung back out, unlock and open the tailgate.

^ With the button in the out position, turn the key clockwise to unlock the tailgate.
^ Push the button to release the hatch glass and use the handle to raise the hatch glass.
^ Open the tailgate door.

4. Follow the published procedure in Section 8H of the Workshop Manual for removing the tailgate lock (key) cylinder.

5. Once the lock cylinder is removed, install J44488 to lock cylinder and place the assembly in a vise using light jaw pressure.

6. Remove circular clip (with a flat screwdriver) and the upper latch bracket. (Figure 5)

7. Bend out the (4) retaining tabs of the lock cylinder mate, remove and discard pivot bracket. (Figure 6 and 7)

8. Remove the coil spring, (white plastic) collar, and then the key cylinder assembly from the lock cylinder mate. (Figure 8)

9. Reinstall core assemblies with new collar, lock cylinder mate, and (pivot) bracket. (Refer to Parts Information section for new parts.)

^ Place the new (plastic) collar over the original key cylinder as shown. (Figure 9)

^ Insert the key cylinder and collar into the new lock cylinder mate as shown and reinstall the original coil spring. (Figure 10 and 11)

^ Align and position the new (pivot) bracket over the assembly. (Figure 12)

10. While holding the core assemblies into position, use the crimping tool of J-44488 to stake the (4) retaining tabs of the new housing. (Figure 13 and 14)

^ Tap the crimping tool with a mallet to stake the tabs.

11. Reinstall the upper latch bracket and the circular clip to the assembled lock cylinder. (Refer to Figure 5)

12. Using the vehicle key, check for proper operation of the repaired lock cylinder assembly.

^ With the button in the OUT position, turn the key back and forth and verify the movement of the latch bracket.

13. Follow the published procedure in Section 8H of the Workshop Manual for reinstalling the repaired tailgate lock (key) cylinder onto the vehicle.
