Rear Cup Holder - Replacement.

SERVICE INFORMATION

Condition:
One or both of the magnetic latches do not hold the rear cup holder lid closed.

Possible Cause:
The metal strike plate for the magnetic latches does not stay bonded to the plastic, or the cover is not flat.

Correction:
To correct this condition, replace the rear beverage holder with a new rear cup holder/console cover (P/N 8-97198-421-3) using the procedure outlined in this bulletin.

NOTE
For vehicles with VIN prior to W4372115, a small modification to the rear console bracket is required. (Refer to Service Procedure Steps 4 and 5)

SERVICE PROCEDURE





1. Remove the rear ashtray from the holder and remove the two attachment screws to remove the ashtray bolder. (Figure 1)





2. Remove the cup holder assembly from the rear console cover by removing the two attachment screws. (Figure 2)








3. Behind the ashtray mounting location, remove the two attachment screws leading to the console bracket and remove the en tire rear console cover. (Figures 3 and 4)











4. (VIN prior to W4372115 ONLY): Using a pair of aviation (tin) snips, carefully cut the console bracket as shown. (Figures 5, 6, and 7)

NOTE:
The thin bracket may warp and bend slightly during cutting. However, the bracket may be bent back using conventional pliers after cutting. At this time, smooth any sharp or rough edges with a file to prevent injury.

5. (VIN prior to W4372115 ONLY):
Test-fit the new replacement rear cup holder/console cover to the modified console bracket, with the cup holder lid in the closed position.





^ For proper latch operation, there should be sufficient clearance between the cut portion of the console bracket and the latch of the cup holder lid. (Figure 8)





6. Reinstall the two screws behind the ashtray mounting location, leading to the console bracket (Figure 9)








7. Open the lid of the cup holder and reinstall the two screws at the base of the new rear cup holder/console cover. (Figure 10 and 11)





8. Reinstall the rear ashtray holder with the two attachment screws, and the ashtray. (Figure 12)
