Rear Cup Holder - Revised Strike Plate Latches

1998 Rodeo (UE) models.
SERVICE INFORMATION
Early production 1998 Rodeo (UE) models were equipped with rear cup holders with bonded strike plate latches. These cup holders were later redesigned with improved strike plate latches that are fastened with screws.
Condition:
The magnetic latches do not hold the rear cup holder lid closed.
Possible Cause:
The metal strike plate for the magnetic latches does not stay bonded to the plastic.
Correction:
Use the parts included in the rear cup holder repair kit (Part Number 2-90002-805-0) to:
- Install an improved strike plate onto the base.
- Replace the rear cup holder lid.

SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Remove the entire cup holder assembly from the rear console by removing the two attachment screws.
2. If the strike plate is still attached, pry loose the existing strike plate from cup holder base and discard.
3. Use the new strike plate as a guide to:
(Figure 1)
- Align the new strike plate to the top edge of the molded recess on the base.
- Center punch the strike plate screw hole.
4. Drill a 5/64-inch hole through the center-punched location of the base.
- Remove any burrs or residual adhesive from the strike plate-mounting surface.
5. Install the new strike plate using the supplied # 4 x 3/8" screw and flat nut.
- Attach the strike plate with the counter-bored portion facing outwards.
- Do not allow the.flat nut to be fixed at an angle. Any protruding portion of the flat nut will interfere during opening of the cup holder.
- Do not over-tighten the screw.
6. Remove and discard the cup holder lid.
- Remove the two screws holding the ribbon-shaped retaining plate to the slide. (Figure 2)
- Remove the ribbon-shaped retaining plate.
- Remove the two recessed mounting screws fastening the slide to the lid. (Figure 3)
7. Align and install the new lid to the slide. (Figure 4 & 5)
- Stamped near one of the recessed mounting screw access hole on the slide is a small 1. This end should be mounted to the opposite end of the cup holder lid strike plate.
NOTE
Pay close attention to the correct alignment of the slide and lid. If the two mounting holes are mismatched, the slide will not fit correctly into the rack.
- Hand-tighten the two recessed screws fasten the slide to the new lid.
8. Align and install the ribbon-shaped retaining plate to the slide. (Figure 6)
- Small 1 stampings are placed on top of the slide and underside of the retaining plate. The ends with the 1 stampings need to be positioned together for proper alignment.
- Hand-tighten the two screws to fasten the retaining plate to the slide
9. Reinstall the cup holder assembly to the rear console using the two original screws.
