Service Procedure
SERVICE PROCEDURE
This campaign involves port installed (PIO) Genuine Isuzu Trailer Hitches installed prior to 5/31/98, and dealer/customer installed hitches (non-PIO).
IDENTIFYING A GENUINE ISUZU TRAILER HITCH
NOTE This section does not apply to vehicles equipped with Genuine Isuzu Trailer Hitches that were installed at AIMI's ports (Port Installed Option) before 5/31/98. For these vehicles, skip to Sub Harness Installation section.
A Genuine Isuzu trailer hitch can be easily distinguished from other hitches produced by the aftermarket with the following steps:
1. Locate the "HITCH CAPACITY" label on the trailer hitch. For Genuine Isuzu trailer hitches, this label is located on the rear- facing portion of the trailer hitch.
2. Examine the "HITCH CAPACITY" label closely for the special identifying items. (FIGURE 1)
- Item A: "US-169"
- Item B: "VALLEY INDUSTRIES"
- Item C: "V-5"
- Item D: "10281700"
- Item E: "4,500 LBS. MAX. GROSS WEIGHT"
"450 LBS. MAX. GROSS TONGUE WEIGHT"
NOTE: All specifications in items A through E must match exactly.
3. If one or more of the above items on the label are different or missing, then this vehicle is not equipped with a Genuine Isuzu trailer hitch. This campaign does not apply to this vehicle. Skip to WARRANTY CLAIM INFORMATION section and claim Labor Operation # 130361 for inspection.
4. If the label on your vehicle's trailer hitch matches the label shown in FIGURE 1, with all the items (A through E) existing on the label, then proceed to Sub Harness Installation section.
SUB HARNESS INSTALLATION
For detailed description of this vehicle's electrical system, refer to the 1998 Rodeo (UE) Electrical Troubleshooting Manual.
1. Record radio presets and remove the DOME LIGHT fuse (10 amp) from position # 5 of the dash fuse box.
2. Locate and detach the rear dome light assembly from the upper-rear speaker panel.
- Remove lens using a small flat screwdriver.
- Remove the light assembly from panel using a Philips screwdriver.
3. Remove rear upper speaker panel by gently pulling on front edge to pop the panel down.
- Allow dome light assembly to pass through the square cutout when removing this panel. (Figure 2)
4. Locate the constant power wire (red wire with white stripe) of the rear dome light harness. There are only two wires leading to the dome light assembly.
5. Approximately three (3) inches from the dome light connector, crimp the supplied T-Tap to the constant power wire using pliers. (Figure 3)
6. Connect the male terminal of the sub harness to the T-Tap and feed the sub harness through the cavity used for vehicle harness to the left-rear speaker location. (Figure 4)
7. Temporarily remove the rubber molding and feed the remaining portion of the sub harness between the inner D-pillar panel and the D-pillar to the jack storage compartment. (Figure 5)
8. Apply two (2) foam cushion tapes to the sub harness routed behind the speaker basket. This will prevent noise and possible damage to the harness from vibration of the rear speaker. (Figure 6)
9. Apply two (2) foam cushion tapes to the upper and lower portions of the D-pillar panel to secure the harness.
NOTE Be sure to route the harness away from the panel clips. (Figure 7, 8)
10. Remove the jack and disconnect the original trailer hitch harness power leads that is connected between the rear accessory power outlet and the accessory power harness connector (B-14).
11. Connect the female terminal of the sub harness to the male terminal of the original trailer hitch harness.
12. Fold additional female terminal of the trailer hitch harness over and place foam tape around connections. (Figure 9)
IMPORTANT This connection is a hot power source. Foam tape must cover the connection completely.
13. Tape excess length of wire of power jumper harness with electrical tape or zip tie and attach to existing harness. (Figure 10)
14. Reconnect accessory power harness connector (B-14) to the rear accessory power outlet.
15. Reinstall the jack.
16. Reinstall the D-pillar panel, rubber molding, rear upper speaker panel, and dome light assembly.
17. Reinstall the DOME LIGHT fuse to the dash fuse box and reset the clock and the radio presets.
18. Test harness for proper function with test light. (Figure 11)
^ Turn head light on with ignition at OFF position.
^ Check for parking light signal at trailer hitch harness connector.
