SERVICE INFORMATION
Condition:
The air conditioning compressor emits a medium-pitch sound (moan) during engine operation at up to 2,000 rpm. The sound is also audible during deceleration.
Correction:
To correct this condition, install a Magnetic Clutch Assembly Service Kit (P/N 8-97219-706-0), using the procedure outlined in this bulletin.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Record any radio station presets and disconnect the battery (-).
2. Remove the upper fan shroud. (Figure 1)
^ Be sure to keep all fan shroud retaining clips for later reinstallation.
3. Remove the radiator fan with fan clutch, and remove the serpentine belt. (Figure 2)
4. Unfasten the center 10 mm bolt of the A/C clutch and remove clutch to expose the snap ring. (Figure 3)
NOTE:
Once the A/C clutch is pulled away from the pulley and shaft, a small shim inserted inside the splined coupling sleeve of the A/C clutch may fall out. This shim must be retained and reused during the initial installation of the new A/C clutch.
5. Remove the center snap ring of the pulley using snap ring pliers. (Figure 4)
6. Remove the A/C pulley using a universal pulley remover and pulley-pulley pilot J-38424. (Figure 5)
IMPORTANT
It is very important that pulley-puller pilot J-38424 is used with the pulley remover during this step to prevent damage to the compressor. If the pilot is not used, the driving bolt of the pulley remover will force the compressor shaft into the housing, causing possible damage to the compressor.
NOTE:
During pulley removal, verify that the force of the pulley remover is applied only to the pulley and not the coil assembly. (Figure 6)
7. Install the new A/C pulley, using special tool J-33940-A with the handle removed.
^ Be sure to "bottom-out" the pulley to the coil assembly of the compressor. (Figure 7)
8. Install a new snap ring to the pulley. (Refer to Figure 4)
^ Be sure to verify that the snap ring is fully seated in the groove of the pulley. If the snap ring does not seat properly, remove the snap ring and re-perform Step 7.
9. Install new A/C clutch with original shim and torque the center bolt to 13 N.m (115 lb. in.).
NOTE:
To prevent rotation during tightening, thread screws through the pre-tapped holes on the A/C clutch center plate and secure as shown, using open end of combination wrench. (Figure 8)
10. Use 90° wire-type feeler gauge and measure air gap between A/C clutch and pulley.
^ Check to be sure that the clutch clearance is between 0.3-0.6 mm (0.010-0.020 in.). (Figure 9 and Figure 10)
11. If the clutch clearance is not in specification:
^ Remove the center bolt and remove AC clutch using J-33944-A tool (Figure 11).
^ Reinstall the new A/C clutch using appropriate shim supplied with kit.
12. Reinstall the serpentine belt with fan pulley, fan clutch and fan.
^ Be sure to route the serpentine belt correctly. Refer to Workshop Manual, if necessary.
13. Reinstall the upper fan shroud. Be sure that all fan shroud retaining clips are installed and in their original location. (Figure 12)
14. Reconnect battery (-) reset clock and radio presets.
