1998 RODEO (UE) ABS: MANUAL CLEARING OF FLASHED ABS DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES

AFFECTED VEHICLES

All 1998 Rodeo (UE) models.

SERVICE INFORMATION

The procedure for manually clearing antilock brake system (ABS) diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) has been revised. The procedure, as currently described on page 5A-38 of the 1998 Rodeo (UE) Workshop Manual (UE098-WSM-L01), will not clear flashed ABS DTCs after completing ABS repairs, even though the ABS warning light on the vehicle dash goes out.

This Service Bulletin describes the proper way to manually clear flashed ABS DTCs after completing ABS repairs. It supersedes the procedure currently described in the Workshop Manual. Be sure to refer to this Service Bulletin whenever manual clearing of flashed ABS DTCs is required. An additional Service Bulletin will be issued at a later date containing the corrected Workshop Manual page.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. After ABS repairs have been completed, start the vehicle.

IMPORTANT!
Be sure the ABS warning light is lit showing there is a DTC stored. If the ABS warning light it not lit, reset the DTC first before continuing with this procedure.

2. Accelerate the vehicle up to 10 mph and hold that speed for a minimum of 5 seconds. Note that the ABS warning light goes out.

3. Stop the vehicle; but, do not turn off the engine.

4. Insert a jumper wire between Pins 4 and 12 of the data link connector (DLC).

5. Wait for the ABS warning light to begin flashing; then, press the brake pedal at least eight times within a 3-second period.

6. Turn off the engine.

7. Remove the jumper wire from the DLC.

8. Verify stored ABS DTCs are cleared (i.e., ABS warning light comes on then goes out when the key is turned to the ON position or when the engine is started).
