BULLETIN NUMBER:SB99-04-S001
ISSUE DATE:
AUGUST 1999
GROUP:
ELECTRICAL
1998 RODEO (UE) / AMIGO (UA) ENGINE GROUND POINT P-6 (ADDENDUM TO SB98-04-L006/SAFETY CAMPAIGN 98V-170)
AFFECTED VEHICLES
1998 Rodeo (UE), Amigo (UA) V6 models.
SERVICE INFORMATION
Condition:
Some affected vehicles may exhibit one or more of the following conditions:
^ Idle speed flare
^ Flashing ABS light
^ Loss of communication to Tech 2
^ Vehicle Speed Sensor codes (such as P0502)
^ Radio system malfunction
^ Check engine light on and no codes
^ Engine stalling
^ Intermittent no start while cranking
^ In addition, other electrical related conditions may exist, either continuously or intermittently.
Possible Cause:
There may be a poor contact or loss of contact at the P-6 ground location. For vehicles previously serviced for SAFETY CAMPAIGN 98V-170 (refer to SB98-04-L006), the attaching bolt of the P-6 ground terminal may have been damaged due to over torqueing or cross threading.
Correction:
To correct this condition, follow the procedure outlined in this bulletin for the inspection and correction of the P-6 ground point for proper electrical contact.
To prevent this condition when servicing the vehicle for SAFETY CAMPAIGN 98V-170, refer to the procedure outlined in this bulletin to ensure proper bolt installation at the P-6 ground terminal.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
CORRECTING POOR/LOSS OF P-6 GROUND
1. Locate P-6 ground in the engine compartment on the passenger side of engine compartment between the battery and cruise control actuator (if equipped). (Figure 1)
2. Remove P-6 ground terminal bolt for ground contact inspection.
^ Inspect ground contact area for corrosion.
^ Inspect bolt and thread for damage or corrosion.
^ Clean the ground area and fastening bolt thoroughly with a wire brush.
^ Replace bolt if damaged or heavily corroded.
3. Reinstall the P-6 ground terminal with the above bolt and tighten using hand tools.
^ Torque the P-6 ground terminal bolt to (14 N.m) 10 lb.ft.
IMPORTANT:
Do not use air/power tools when tightening. Over-tightening may occur. Use only hand tools and torque the bolt by hand. Do not over-tighten or under-tighten the bolt.
ENSURING PROPER P-6 GROUND DURING SAFETY CAMPAIGN 98V-170
1. Prior to performing Step 5 of SB98-04-L006 (98V-170), the following steps will ensure positive ground contact at P-6 (Figure 2).
^ Inspect ground contact area for corrosion.
^ Inspect bolt and thread for damage or corrosion.
^ Clean the ground area and fastening bolt thoroughly with a wire brush.
^ Replace bolt if damaged or heavily corroded.
2. Reinstall the P-6 ground terminal with the above bolt and tighten using hand tools.
^ Torque the P-6 ground terminal bolt to (14 N.m) 10 lb.ft.
IMPORTANT
Do not use air/power tools when tightening. Over-tightening may occur. Use only hand tools and torque the bolt by hand. Do not over-tighten or under-tighten the bolt.
