Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair
Cylinder Head Replacement (Left)Removal Procedure
1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
2. Drain the engine coolant.
3. Remove the air cleaner outlet duct from the throttle body.
4. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
5. Remove the engine cooling fan assembly.
Important: Do not evacuate the A/C system. The A/C pipes can remain on the compressor.
6. Remove the air conditioning compressor, if equipped, and move aside.
7. Remove the AIR pipe bracket and nut, if equipped from the power steering pump rear bracket stud.
8. Remove the nuts holding the power steering pump rear bracket to the engine.
Important: The power steering pump can remain on the power steering pump mounting bracket. The power steering pump hoses can remain attached to the power steering pump.
9. Remove the power steering pump mounting bracket and secure out of the way.
10. Remove the power steering pump mounting bracket stud from the cylinder head.
11. Remove the intake manifold.
12. Remove the exhaust manifold.
13. Remove the spark plug wire harness and the support.
14. Remove the ground wires at the rear of the cylinder head.
15. Remove the fuel line bracket bolt at the rear of the cylinder head.
16. Remove the valve pushrods.
17. Remove the cylinder head bolts.
18. Remove the cylinder head.
19. Clean all surfaces.
Installation Procedure
1. Install the cylinder head.
2. Install the valve pushrods.
3. Install the spark plug wire harness and the support.
Tighten the support bolts to 12 N.m (106 lb in).
4. Install the ground wires at the rear of the cylinder head.
Tighten the ground wire bolt to 35 N.m (26 lb ft).
5. Install the fuel pipe bracket bolt at the rear of the cylinder head.
Tighten the fuel pipe bracket bolt to 30 N.m (22 lb ft).
6. Install the exhaust manifold.
7. Install the intake manifold.
8. Install the power steering pump mounting bracket stud in the cylinder head.
Tighten the power steering pump mounting bracket stud to 20 N.m (15 lb ft).
9. Install the power steering pump mounting bracket.
10. Install the nuts holding the power steering pump rear bracket to the engine.
Tighten the power steering pump rear bracket nuts to 41 N.m (30 lb ft).
11. Install the AIR bracket and nut, if equipped.
Tighten the nut to 41 N.m (30 lb ft).
12. Install the air conditioning compressor, if equipped.
13. Install the engine cooling fan.
14. Fill the engine coolant system.
15. Connect the battery negative cable.
16. Install the air cleaner assembly.
17. Install the air cleaner outlet duct onto the throttle body.
Cylinder Head Replacement (Right)
Removal Procedure
1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
2. Drain the engine coolant.
3. Remove the air cleaner outlet duct from the throttle body.
4. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
5. Remove the engine cooling fan assembly.
6. Remove the intake manifold.
7. Remove the exhaust manifold.
8. Remove the spark plug wire harness and the support.
9. Remove the ground wires at the rear of the cylinder head.
10. Remove the generator mounting bracket.
11. Remove the generator mounting bracket stud from the cylinder head.
12. Remove the valve pushrods.
13. Remove the cylinder head bolts.
14. Remove the cylinder head.
15. Clean all surfaces.
Installation Procedure
1. Install the cylinder head.
2. Install the valve pushrods.
3. Install the spark wire harness and support.
Tighten the support bolts to 12 N.m (106 lb in).
4. Install the ground wires at the rear of the cylinder head.
Tighten the ground wire stud to 35 N.m (26 lb ft).
5. Install the exhaust manifolds.
6. Install the intake manifold.
7. Install the generator mounting bracket stud to the cylinder head.
Tighten the stud to 20 N.m (15 lb ft).
8. Install the generator mounting bracket.
9. Install the engine cooling fan.
10. Fill the engine coolant system.
11. Connect the battery negative cable.
12. Install the air cleaner assembly.
13. Install the air cleaner outlet duct onto the throttle body.
