Air Bag(s) Arming and Disarming: Service and Repair

CAUTION: When you are performing service on or near the SRS components or the SRS wiring, you must disable the SRS system. Refer to Disabling the SRS. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause air bag deployment, personal injury, or unnecessary SRS repairs.

The supplemental restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) maintains a reserve energy supply. Ignition voltage may provide deployment energy if the 23 volt Loop Reserve malfunction. Deployment power is available for as much as 10 minutes after disconnecting the vehicle power by any of the following methods:
- You turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
- You remove the fuse that provides power to the SDM.
- You disconnect the vehicle battery from the vehicle electrical system.

Performing the following procedure prevents deploying of the air bags from the reserve energy supply power.

Disabling the SRS
1. Turn the steering wheel so that the vehicle's wheels are pointing straight ahead.
2. Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position.
3. Remove the key from the ignition switch.

Important: With the SIR Fuse removed and the ignition switch in the RUN position, the AIR BAG warning lamp illuminates. This is normal operation, and does not indicate an SRS malfunction.

4. Remove the SIR Fuse from the IP fuse block.
5. Remove the LH sound insulator, if equipped. Refer to Closeout/Insulator Panel Replacement - Left in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console.

6. Remove the knee bolster. Refer to knee Bolster Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console.

7. Remove the connector position assurance (CPA) from the driver yellow 2-way connector located at the base of the steering column.
8. Disconnect the driver yellow 2-way connector located at the base of the steering column.

9. Open the instrument panel compartment door, Lift, stop and allow door to fully open.

10. Remove the connector position assurance (CPA) from the passenger yellow 2-way connector located behind the glove box.
11. Disconnect the passenger yellow 2-way connector located behind the glove box.

Enabling the SRS

1. Remove the key from the ignition switch.
2. Connect the passenger yellow 2-way connector located behind the glove box.
3. Install the connector position assurance (CPA) to the passenger yellow 2-way connector located behind the glove box.

4. Close the instrument panel compartment door.

5. Connect the driver yellow 2-way connector located at the base of the steering column.
6. Install the connector position assurance (CPA) to the driver yellow 2-way connector located at the base of the steering column.
7. Install the knee bolster. Refer to knee Bolster Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console.
8. Install the LH sound insulator, if equipped. Refer to Closeout/Insulator Panel Replacement Left in instrument Panel, Gauges and Console.
9. Install the SIR fuse to the IP fuse block.
10. Staying well away from both air bags, turn the ignition switch to the RUN position.
1. The AIR BAG warning lamp will flash 7 times.
2. The AIR BAG warning lamp will then turn OFF.

11. Perform the SRS Diagnostic System Check if the AIR BAG Warning Lamp does not operate as described.
