Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, Jacket (Column Shift)

Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, Jacket (Column Shift)

Disassembly Procedure

1. Remove the lock module assembly.
2. Inspect the steering column for accident damage.

3. Remove the 2 pan head tapping screws from the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly.
Remove the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly.

4. Remove the electrical BTSI actuator in the following way:
1. Put the shift lever clevis into the neutral position.
2. Use a small screwdriver to pry the electrical BTSI actuator away from the steering column jacket assembly and the cable shift cam assembly.

5. Remove the 3 flat head tapping screws from the linear shift assembly.
Remove the linear shift assembly from the steering column support assembly

6. Remove the inner boot seal (4).
7. Remove the steering shaft seal (3) from the adapter and bearing assembly (1).
8. Remove the shaft seal retainer (2) from the adapter and bearing assembly (1).
9. Remove the adapter and bearing assembly (1) from the steering shaft assembly.

10. Remove the steering shaft assembly (1) from the steering column support assembly (2) and the steering column jacket assembly (3).

11. Remove the 4 torx head screws (1) from the steering column support assembly (2).
12. Discard the 4 torx head screws (1).
13. Remove the steering column support assembly (2) from the steering column jacket assembly (3).

Assembly Procedure

1. Attach the steering column support assembly (2) to the steering column jacket assembly (1) with 4 torx head screws (1).
Tighten
Tighten the 4 torx screws to 17 N.m (13 lb ft).

2. Install the steering shaft assembly (1) into the steering column support assembly (2).

3. Install the adapter and bearing assembly (1) onto the steering column jacket assembly by performing the following steps:
1. Align the tab on the adapter and bearing assembly (1) with the slot in the steering column jacket assembly
2. Push the adapter and bearing assembly (1) onto the steering shaft assembly until the tab snaps into the slot.
4. Install the shaft seal retainer (2) onto the adapter and bearing assembly (1).
1. Align the slots of the shaft seal retainer (2) to the ribs of the adapter and bearing assembly (1).
2. Push the shaft seal retainer (2) onto the steering shaft assembly so that the shaft seal retainer (2) contacts the adapter and bearing assembly (1).
5. Install the steering shaft seal (3) onto the steering shaft assembly.
6. Install the inner boot seal (4) onto the steering shaft assembly.

7. Install the linear shift assembly onto the steering column support assembly.
8. Secure the linear shift assembly to the steering column support assembly with 3 flat head tapping screws.
Move the linear shift assembly out of the park position to install the lower socket tapping screw.
Tighten
Tighten the 3 flat head tapping screws to 10 N.m (89 lb in).

9. Install the electrical BTSI actuator.
1O. Put the shift lever clevis into the neutral position.

11. Adjust the electrical BTSI actuator by performing the following steps:
1. Pull out the tab (1) on the adjuster block side (2)of the electrical BTSI actuator.
2. Press on the adjuster block (2) to compress the internal adjuster spring which disengages the adjuster teeth.
3. Slide the adjuster block (2) as far away from the solenoid as possible.
4. Push inward on the tab (1) in order to lock the adjuster block in place.
12. Inspect the electrical BTSI actuator for the following items:
1. The electrical BTSI actuator must lock the shift lever clevis when the shift lever clevis is put into the park position.
Once the steering column is installed in the vehicle, the gear shift lever must remain in the park position unless the brake pedal is depressed.
2. The solenoid will be energized.
3. Readjust the electrical BTSI actuator if needed.

14. Install the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly onto the steering column housing assembly.

Important: Be sure that the electrical contact of the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly (2) rests on the turn signal cancel cam assembly.

15. Screw the 2 pan head tapping screws into the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly.
Tighten
Tighten the 2 pan head tapping screws to 7 N.m (62 lb in).

16. Install the lock module assembly.
