Tailgate Glass - Rattles/Squeaks

1998 to current Rodeo (UE) models.

SERVICE INFORMATION

Condition:

Some customers may comment on rattling or squeaking sound coming from the rear cargo area.

Possible Cause:

Incorrect alignment between tailgate latch and locking mechanism.

Correction:

Install two (2) rubber washers on each threaded bolt section of the hinge (to align or center the hinge). Follow procedure as outlined.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Raise the rear hatch glass.








2. Locate rear tailgate screws and loosen all four (4) screws. (See figure 1 & 2).








3. After loosening all four (4) screws remove one (1) screw at a time and install the large sized washer over the threaded section of the hinge first and install the small sized washer second (see figures 3, 4, 5 & 6). Repeat this step for the remaining three (3) screws.





3. Tighten screws to the specified torque specification. 52 lb in. (See figure 7)








4. Close the tailgate glass and make sure the latch is centered in the locking mechanism. If the latch is not aligned to the locking mechanism refer to step 5 ( See figure 8 & 9).

5. Center tailgate latch by loosening latch screws, lower glass and align with locking mechanism. Once latch has been aligned, carefully tighten latch screws. (torque: 52 lb in)
