SERVICE INFORMATION

Condition:

Whenever the rear brake shoes are replaced, it is important to set the proper shoe-to-drum clearance, prior to the reinstallation of the brake drum.

^ If the clearance is below specification, the following condition(s) may exist:

- Constant contact of brake shoe

- Premature wear of brake shoe

^ If the clearance is above specification, the following condition may exist:

- Excessive stroke of the brake pedal during braking

Correction:

To prevent the above conditions follow the procedure outlined in this bulletin to set the proper shoe-to-drum clearance using a commonly available brake-resetting gauge.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Follow published procedure for removal and replacement of rear brake shoes.

^ Proceed to the following steps, one side at a time.

^ When one side is finished, resume to Step 2 for the other side.

2. Prior to installing the brake drum, measure the inner diameter of the brake drum using a brake-resetting gauge tool. (Figure 1).

3. Using the measurement of drum as a reference, compare this dimension with the outer diameter of the installed brake shoes. (Figure 2)

4. Turn the adjuster wheel to adjust the installed diameter of the brake shoes so that there is a 0.4 mm (0.016") clearance between the referenced gauge tool and shoe (Figure 3)

5. Reinstall that side's (referenced earlier W/gauge) brake drum, after proper adjustment clearence of 0.4 mm (0.016") has been obtained. (Figure 4)
