BULLETIN NUMBER:SB01-09-S001
ISSUE DATE:
SEPTEMBER 2001
GROUP:
BRAKES
ELECTRONIC HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT
(ABS PUMP RUNS)
AFFECTED VEHICLES:
1999 Rodeo (UF) and Amigo (UA) Sport Utility Vehicles
SERVICE INFORMATION
Condition:
The Hydraulic Unit (EHCU-ABS pump) runs continuously regardless of ignition key position. In some instances ABS light goes on and/or battery drainage occurs. When the condition occurs (ABS pump running continuously), the hydraulic brakes will continue to operate normally but the ABS system will not be in operation.
Possible Cause:
An internal short in the Coil Integrated Module may cause the Hydraulic Unit to run continuously regardless of key position and does not turn the ABS pump off.
Correction:
Replace the Coil Integrated Module according to the procedures described in the bulletin.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Park and secure the vehicle.
2. Record the customer's radio settings and disconnect the battery ground terminal.
3. Open the hood and support with the prop rod.
4. Replace the Coil Integrated Module,
a) Disconnect the harness connectors. (Figures 1 and 2)
b) Remove the Coil Integrated Module Torx screws that secure the Coil Integrated Module to the Hydraulic Unit. (Figure 3)
CAUTION:
Remove the Torx screws carefully or damage to Torx screws may occur.
NOTE:
During Coil Integrated Module replacement, visually inspect the Hydraulic Unit harness and plastic gasket within the Hydraulic Unit for damage caused by excessive heat (melt/burnt). If damage is found, please follow the appropriate workshop manual for Hydraulic Unit (FHCU) replacement. (Figure 1)
c) Remove the Coil Integrated Module from the Hydraulic Unit. (Figure 3)
d) Clean the Coil Integrated Module mounting surface on the Hydraulic Unit with a clean shop towel.
e) Attach the new Coil Integrated Module to the Hydraulic Unit. (Figure 3)
IMPORTANT:
The Coil Integrated Modules are not interchangeable between 2WD and 4WD drivetrains. Make sure that a 2WD Coil Integrated Module is installed only on a 2WD vehicle and a 4WD Coil Integrated Module is installed only on a 4WD vehicle.
f) Install the Torx screws to the Hydraulic Unit and tighten to the specified torque of 39 lb in.
g) Install the harness connectors.
5. After the repair has been completed, reconnect the battery ground terminal.
6. Turn the ignition key ON and verify that no ABS code exists.
7. Set the clock and the customer's radio settings.
8. Close the hood and return the vehicle to the customer.
