A/T - Oil Pan Drain Plug Leak

AFFECTED VEHICLES
All 1996 2000 Rodeo (UE), Amigo (UA), Trooper (UX), and 1999 - 2000 VehiCROSS (VX) V6 models with transmission serial numbers: 4754596 - 5831 756
SERVICE INFORMATION
Condition:
The transmission may experience leakage in the area of Overfill Plug and Oil Drain Plug.
Possible Cause:
Improper oil pan surface finish.
Correction:
To correct this condition, follow the procedures below and inspect Overfill Plug and Oil Drain Plug for any signs of leakage. If leakage is found remove the leaking Over- fill Plug or Oil Drain Plug and replace with new Oil Drain Plug and 0-ring kit.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Park the vehicle on level ground and apply the parking brake firmly.
2. Keep the engine running at idle.
NOTE:
Be sure that the transmission fluid temperature is below 86C F (30° C).
3. Move the selector lever through all gear ranges, then move the selector lever to park.
4. Inspect the Oil Drain Plug for any signs of leakage.
5. If leakage is found at the Oil Drain Plug: (Figure 1)
^ Turn the engine off.
^ Remove the drain plug.
^ Immediately replace with a "New" Drain Plug Kit (the kit includes new plug and 0-ring). (Figure 2)
^ Tighten the drain plug to the specified torque of 28 lb ft.
6. With the engine off, inspect the Overfill Plug for any signs of leakage.
IMPORTANT:
Do not open the Overfill Plug with the engine off.
7. If leakage is found at the overfill screw (or replenishing the transmission fluid from transmission fluid loss during drain plug replacement):
^ Start the engine and let the engine idle for 3 minutes.
^ Remove the overfill screw.
^ Add transmission fluid.
^ Replace (if leakage is found) with "New" Drain Plug Kit (the kit includes new plug and 0-ring). (Figure 2)
^ Tighten the overfill screw to the specified torque of 28 lb ft.
8. Return the vehicle to the customer after repair.
