Shift Interlock: Description and Operation
With the engine running (or the ignition switch in the
ON position) and the transmission control lever in the
PARK, the lever cannot be shifted from
PARKto another position unless you depress the brake pedal. That's because a signal is sent through the parking position detecting switch to the
shift lock controller which energizes the shift lock solenoid, preventing the transmission control lever from being moved. When you depress the brake pedal, a signal is sent to the shift lock controller which then deenergizes the shift lock solenoid and allows the transmission control lever to be moved.
