AFFECTED VEHICLES
All 2000 - 2001 model year Trooper, Rodeo and Rodeo Sport with 3.5L and 3.2L engines
SERVICE INFORMATION
P1340 will set after a cranking event and the routine for synchronization has failed to be completed. To understand the synchronization event, review the following information:
^ During the crank mode, the engine is in "Waste Spark" mode.
^ As the engine cranks, the PCM will monitor bank "A" (cylinders 1, 3, and 5).
^ The PCM would then monitor the combustion patterns. After a certain pre-determined number of combustion events were counted on bank "A", the synchronization would occur.
^ If any of these combustion events fail, the vehicle will remain in "Waste Spark" mode and set P1340. P1340 is an "A" type code and will always set the MIL on that key cycle.
If a vehicle enters the service bay with this code and the code sets intermittently, make sure to check the following areas:
^ The high voltage sense return lines (one for each bank of coils) need to be checked for opens and shorts.
^ Refer to the appropriate Electrical Troubleshooting Manual to determine wire colors and terminal pin numbers.
