Instrument Panel (I/P) Assembly Replacement

Removal Procedure

1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling Zone 3 and to SIR Disabling and Enabling Zone 5 in SIR.
2. Remove the left closeout/insulator panel.
3. Remove the knee bolster trim panel.
4. Remove the knee bolster.




5. Remove the left HVAC push pin (2).
6. Remove the left HVAC floor duct (1).
7. Fully lower the steering column. Refer to Steering Column Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column.
8. Remove the shift lever bezel, Oldsmobile only.
9. Remove the center console.
10. Remove the I/P lower sound insulator panel, GMC or Chevrolet only.
11. Remove the I/P accessory trim plate, GMC or Oldsmobile only.
12. Remove the I/P cluster bezel, Chevrolet only.
13. Remove the I/P cluster.
14. Remove the right closeout/insulator panel.
15. Remove the I/P storage compartment door.
16. Remove the radio.
17. Remove the HVAC control module.




18. Remove the HVAC control module wire harness attachment (1) from the I/P substrate.




19. Remove the left I/P access cover.
20. Remove the headlamp switch.
21. If replacing the I/P, remove the headlamp switch bezel.
22. Remove the windshield garnish moldings.
23. Remove the trim pad.
24. Remove the front upper speakers, if equipped.




25. Remove the right I/P access cover.




26. Remove the side window defogger outlet screw.




27. Remove the bolts securing the lower portion of the instrument panel to the vehicle.




28. Remove the bolts that secure the middle and upper portion of the instrument panel to the vehicle.
29. With the aid of an assistant, lift up from the bottom of the instrument panel in order to release the I/P from the positioning locators.
30. Remove the instrument panel from the vehicle.
31. Place the I/P on a clean prepared surface.
32. If replacing the I/P, remove the passenger inflatable restraint I/P module.
33. If replacing the I/P, remove the air distribution duct vents from the instrument panel.

Installation Procedure

1. If replacing the I/P, install the air distribution duct vents to the instrument panel.
2. If replacing the I/P, install the passenger inflatable restraint module to the instrument panel.
3. With the aid of an assistant, install the instrument panel to the vehicle.

Important: Ensure the wiring harnesses and electrical connectors are not pinched behind the instrument panel and are positioned for proper connection.

4. Fully seat the instrument panel to the positioning locators.





Important: Do not tighten the I/P retaining bolts until all of the bolts have been loosely installed.

5. Install the bolts securing the middle and upper portion of the instrument panel to the vehicle.




6. Install the bolts that secure the lower portion of the instrument panel to the vehicle.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

7. Complete the installation of all of the bolts that retain the I/P to the vehicle.

Tighten the bolts to 7 N.m (62 lb in).




8. Install the side window defogger outlet screw.

Tighten the screw to 2.5 N.m (22 lb in).




9. Install the right I/P access cover.
10. Install the front upper speakers, if equipped.
11. Install the trim pad.
12. Install the windshield garnish moldings.
13. If replacing the I/P, Install the headlamp switch bezel.
14. Install the headlamp switch to the bezel.




15. Install the left I/P access cover.




16. Install the HVAC control module wire harness attachment (1) to the I/P substrate.
17. Install the HVAC control module.
18. Install the radio.
19. Install the I/P cluster.
20. Install the I/P cluster bezel, Chevrolet only.
21. Install the I/P accessory trim plate, GMC or Oldsmobile only.
22. Install the I/P lower sound insulator, GMC or Chevrolet only.
23. Install the center console.
24. Install the shift lever bezel, Oldsmobile only.
25. Install the I/P compartment door.
26. Install the right closeout/insulator panel.
27. Install the steering column.




28. Install the left HVAC floor duct (1).
29. Install the left HVAC floor duct push pin (2).
30. Install the knee bolster.
31. Install the knee bolster trim panel.
32. Install the left closeout/insulator panel.
33. Enable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling Zone 3 and to SIR Disabling and Enabling Zone 5 in SIR.
