Popping, Snapping or Creaking Noise From C-Pillar/Roof Area

Service Information

Condition:
Some customers may comment on a noise in the roof area behind the rear doors when driving or making parking lot maneuvers.

Possible Cause:
This may be caused by two pieces of metal making contact in the C-pillar area.

Correction:
Reposition sheet metal behind C-pillar.

Service Procedure

Reposition the sheet metal following the procedure.

1. Remove the left and right windshield garnish molding. If necessary, refer to Garnish Molding Replacement-Windshield Pillar in the Service Manual.

2. Remove the roof console. If necessary, refer to Console Replacement-Overhead in the Service Manual.

3. Disconnect the electrical connector to the mirror and the rain sensor.

4. Disconnect the coax cable from the navigational antenna if equipped.

5. Remove the left side and right side sunshade. If necessary, refer to Sunshade Replacement.

6. Remove the upper half of the left and right B-pillar garnish molding.

7. Remove the left and right C-pillar garnish molding. If necessary, refer to Garnish Molding Replacement Body Side Window-Front in the Service Manual.

8. Remove the left and right D-pillar garnish molding. If necessary, refer to Garnish Molding Replacement-Body Side Window Rear in the Service Manual.

9. Unplug the electrical connector for the side window power motor and the harness from the D-pillar.

10. If equipped with rear A/C, remove the 3rd row seat. Refer to Seal Replacement in the Service Manual. If not equipped with A/C, proceed to step 13.

11. Remove the lift gate sill plate. If necessary, refer to Door Sill Plate Replacement-Liftgate.

12. Remove the right quarter panel trim.

13. Remove the A/C duct.

14. Remove the assist handle. If necessary, refer to Assist Handle Replacement in the Service Manual.

15. Fold the seat down to give room for the headliner when dropping.

16. Remove the weatherstrip halfway down the door opening.

17. With the aid of an assistant, remove the two push pins and lower the headliner. Place the front of the headliner on the top of the dash. This will give more room in the rear of the truck.





18. The illustration shows where the sheet metal is making contact.





19. With a pry bar, reposition the sheet metal 10 mm (3/8 in) to eliminate the noise on the left or right side as seen in the illustration.

20. Install the headliner with the aid of an assist and install the two push pins in the headliner.

21. Install the headliner wire harness to the left C-pillar.

22. Install the roof console. If necessary, refer to Console Replacement-Overhead in the Service Manual.

23. Install the left and right sun shade. If necessary, refer to Sunshade Replacement.

24. Reconnect the coax cable for the navigational antenna if equipped.

25. Reconnect the electrical connector to the mirror and the rain sensor.

26. Install the left side and right side windshield garnish molding. If necessary, refer to Garnish Molding Replacement Windshield in the Service Manual.

27. Install the upper half of the left side and right side B-pillar garnish molding.

28. Install the A/C duct.

29. Install the right quarter panel trim.

30. Install the left side and right side C-pillar garnish molding. If necessary, refer to Garnish Molding Replacement Body Side Front Window in the Service Manual.

31. Install the left side and right side D-pillar garnish molding. If necessary, refer to Garnish Molding Replacement-Body Side Window Rear in the Service Manual.

32. Install the lift gate sill plate.

33. Install all the four door weatherstrip and the lift gate weatherstrip.

34. Install the assist handle.

35. Install the 3rd row seat. If necessary, refer to Seat Replacement-Rear in the Service Manual.
