Interior - Dash Foam Seal Loose/Wavy/Distorted

Dash/Instrument Panel Foam Closeout Seal Distorted, Wavy, Loose And/Or Seal Could Partially Cover VIN Plate (This Bulletin Supercedes SB07-11-S006)

Affected Vehicles:
2007-2008 Isuzu i-290/i-370 (TI)
2006 Isuzu i-280/i-350 (TI)

Service Information

This bulletin is being revised to update model years update the Service Procedure and to update Warranty Information.

Condition:





Some customers may comment on a distorted, wavy, loose seal around the dash/instrument panel (IP) and the IP seal could partially cover the VIN plate as shown.

Possible Cause:

The adhesive backing on the IP outer seal may become loose.

Correction:

Replace the IP outer seal using the procedure listed below.

Service Procedure

IMPORTANT:
The IP carrier does not have to be removed from the vehicle to perform this repair.

1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling in the Service Manual.

2. Open all doors.

3. Remove the left and right windshield garnish moldings. Refer to Windshield Pillar Garnish Molding Replacement in the Service Manual.

4. Remove the three upper IP trim covers and nuts located on the top of the IP pad.

5. Remove the knee bolster trim panel. Refer to Driver Knee Bolster Panel Replacement in the Service Manual.

6. Remove the knee bolster. Refer to Knee Bolster Replacement in the Service Manual.





7. Disconnect the HVAC mode cable (1) from the mode control cam.

8. Disconnect the steering column electrical connectors.

9. Remove the four steering column bolts and position the steering column assembly down onto the drivers floor.





10. Remove the two carrier bolts (1) from the brake pedal/steering column support bracket.

11. Remove the left IP end trim panel.





12. Remove the two left carrier bolts (1).

13. Remove the right IP end trim panel.

14. Remove the two right carrier bolts (1).

15. Remove the right front door sill plate. Refer to Front Door Sill Plate Replacement in the Service Manual.

16. Remove the right hinge pillar trim panels. Refer to Body Hinge Pillar Trim Panel Replacement - Right Side in the Service Manual.

17. Remove the right lower carrier bolt (1).

18. Remove the lower center IP extension Refer to Instrument Panel Lower Center Trim Replacement in the Service Manual.





19. Remove the two center lower carrier bolts (1)





IMPORTANT:
You may need an assistant to help lift up and pull back on the IP carrier assembly to release the attaching hook from the right side bracket. The hook on the IP carrier and the sheet metal bracket are shown above.





20. Reposition the complete IP carrier assembly as shown below.

21. Remove the old IP outer seal and discard.

22. Cover and protect the rear and top of the IP panel before cleaning.

IMPORTANT:
Position a fan to circulate the air from inside the vehicle, this will help limit any cleaner odor from the vehicle.

23. Apply a small amount of Kent(R) Automotive Acrysol(TM) or equivalent to a shop towel and clean the glue from the IP pad sealing edge ONLY.

IMPORTANT:
The notched portion of the seal is for the VIN plate. Make sure the adhesive backing on the foam seal is adhering to the IP pad edge. If the seal is not adhering, re-clean the sealing area with denature alcohol and install the seal. Install the new IP outer seal starting at the right side of the instrument panel and working toward the left side while pushing down on the seal.

24. Remove the cover and reposition the IP carrier assembly back into position with the help of an assistant.

25. Verify the IP outer seal is not seen in the VIN plate area.

26. Install the two right side IP carrier bolts and tighten.

Tighten

Tighten the bolts to 20 Nm (15 lb ft).

27. Install the right side IP end trim panel.

28. Install the right lower carrier bolt and tighten.

Tighten

Tighten the bolt to 9 Nm (80 lb in).

29. Install the right front door sill plate. Refer to Front Door Sill Plate Replacement in the Service Manual.

30. Install the right hinge pillar trim panel. Refer to Body Hinge Pillar Trim Panel Replacement - Right Side in the Service Manual.

31. Install the two lower center IP carrier bolts and tighten.

Tighten

Tighten the bolts to 9 Nm (80 lb in).

32. Install the lower center IP extension. Refer to Instrument Panel Lower Center Trim Replacement in the Service Manual.

33. Install the two carrier bolts to the brake pedal/steering column support bracket.

Tighten

Tighten the bolts to 20 Nm (15 lb ft).

34. Install the steering column and the four steering column bolts.

35. Tighten the steering column bolts.

Tighten

Tighten the bolts to 27 Nm (20 lb ft).

36. Connect the steering column electrical connectors.

37. Connect the HVAC mode cable to the mode control cam.

38. Install the knee bolster. Refer to Knee Bolster Replacement in the Service Manual.

39. Install the knee bolster trim panel. Refer to Driver Knee Bolster Panel Replacement in the Service Manual.

40. Install the three upper IP nuts located on the top of the IP and tighten.

Tighten

Tighten the nuts to 9 Nm (80 lb in).

41. Install the three upper IP trim covers located on the top of the IP.

42. Install the two left side IP carrier bolts and tighten.

Tighten

Tighten the bolts to 20 Nm (15 lb ft).

43. Install the left side IP end trim panel.

44. Install the left windshield garnish molding. Refer to Windshield Pillar Garnish Molding Replacement in the Service Manual.

45. Enable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling in the Service Manual.

46. Close the doors.
