Diesel Particle Filter (DPF): Testing and Inspection

Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF)

Inspection
1. Check the filter part of the DPF.
- Visually check the filter for melt, damage or clogging.
- Shine a light on the backside of the filter. If the light penetrates through the filter, replace the filter part.

2. Check the oxidation catalyst.
- Visually check the oxidation catalyst for melt, damage or clogging.

Air-tightness check

Perform after installing the DPF to the vehicle.
- Once the engine is warmed up, run at maximum non-load RPM.
- To ensure there are no gas leakages, with the engine revved up, spray soapy water on the pressure hose (1) and sleeve nuts (2), (3) connecting parts.

Filter inspection (exhaust differential pressure)

Perform after installing the DPF to the vehicle.

1. Start the engine and confirm there are no exhaust leakage from the DPF related parts (such as exhaust temperature sensor, differential pressure sensor, and connecting parts of hoses).

2. Inspect the differential pressure.
a. Observe the exhaust gas temperature (EGT) 2 parameter with a scan tool. Make sure the temperature is less than 302° F (150° C). If more than 302° F (150° C), let increase 1000 RPM without load. (Turn the idle up sensor clockwise)
b. Accelerate the engine to W.O.T. (accelerator pedal full travel) and read the exhaust differential pressure parameter when the EGT 2 parameter is reached to 392° F (200° C).

3. If the inspection value is higher than limit value, replace the filter.

Limit; 3.4 kPa (25.5 mmHg / 0.49 psi)

Differential Pressure Sensor Zero Correction

If the differential pressure sensor assembly has been replaced, do the followings (on the vehicle)

Important:
- Do not do this work within two hours after DPF regeneration.
- Do this work while the differential pressure sensor is at normal temperature.

1. Turn the starter switch from key OFF to key ON (do not start the engine).
2. Wait for approximate 30 seconds.
3. Turn the starter switch from key ON to key OFF.
4. Wait for over 15 seconds.

DPF Regeneration Data Reset

Carry out the following steps when the DPF assembly is replaced.

1. Install a scan tool.
2. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
3. Select Diagnostics > appropriate vehicle identification > Engine > 4HK1 (C/Rail) > Programming > DPF Regeneration data reset.
4. Initiate the reset function in accordance with the on screen instructions.
5. After the reset is complete, if the -Programming Completed Successfully!- message is displayed, follow the on screen instructions to advance the end procedure.
