Indicator / Warning Message Description

1. DEF Remaining Level Warning

Under normal driving conditions
As for the DEF remaining amount inside the DEF tank, the DEF control module calculates the signal sent from the DEF level sensor which is installed on the DEF tank and displays the remaining amount in 4 levels on the multi-display.

DEF remaining level warning
DEF is a required fluid for the operation of your diesel engine just as diesel fuel is required. To avoid running out of DEF your vehicle will provide warnings, indicators and engine power reductions in progressive stages to encourage adding DEF. The following is a summary of the DEF low level warnings, indicators, power reductions and severe vehicle speed limitation. These warning and indicator lamp will go out automatically and engine power will be restored to normal after the SCR system detects that the DEF tank is refilled with DEF.

Stage 1
When driving is continued with the DEF remaining level 1 in Green indicated on the multi-display, the ECM issues following warnings upon request from the DEF control module.
- The refill DEF warning lamp is indicated on the multi-display.
- The DEF remaining level indicated on the multi-display is changed to Level 1 in Amber.
- The DEF indicator lamp is turned on.
- The reduced engine power indicator lamp is turned on.
- The warning buzzer is rung once.
- 55 MPH (89 km/h) vehicle speed restriction is imposed.

At this point, if the DEF of 1.5 gal (1.3 L) or more is added, the warnings and vehicle speed restriction are cancelled.

After the DEF is added, make sure that the refill DEF warning lamp, DEF indicator lamp and reduced engine power indicator lamp on the IP cluster are off.

Stage 2
After Stage 1 warning is issued, if the driving is continued for approx. another 200 miles (320 km), the ECM changes the content of warnings as follows.
- The refill DEF warning lamp is indicated on the multi-display. (No change from Stage 1)
- The DEF remaining level 1 in Amber indicated on the multi-display changes its state from solid illumination to slow blinking.
- The DEF indicator lamp changes its state from solid illumination to slow blinking.
- The reduced engine power indicator lamp is turned on. (No change from Stage 1)
- The warning buzzers are rung 3 times.
- 55 MPH (89 km/h) vehicle speed restriction is changed to 35 MPH (56 km/h) vehicle speed restriction.

Stage 3
If the driving is continued with the stage 2 warnings and the effective remaining level of DEF tank reaches 0, the ECM changes the content of warnings as follows.
- The refill DEF warning lamp is indicated on the multi-display. (No change from Stage 2)
- The DEF remaining level gauge indication on the multi-display changes its color from Amber to Red.
- The DEF indicator lamp changes its state from slow blinking to quick blinking.
- The reduced engine power indicator lamp is turned on. (No change from Stage 2)
- The warning buzzers are rung 3 times with short intervals.
- 35 MPH vehicle speed restriction is maintained. (No change from Stage 2)

At this point, if the DEF of 1.5 gal (1.3 L) or more is added, the warnings and vehicle speed restriction are cancelled.

After the DEF is added, make sure that the refill DEF warning lamp, DEF indicator lamp and reduced engine power indicator lamp on the multi-display are off.

Stage 4 (2011 MY)
From the stage 3 warning status, if the engine is restarted or the vehicle is driven for 35 miles (56 km) and stopped (the vehicle speed becomes 0 MPH (0 km/h), the ECM changes the content of warnings as follows.
- The refill DEF warning lamp is indicated on the multi-display. (No change from Stage 3)
- The DEF remaining level on the multi-display is indicated in Red. (No change from Stage 3)
- The DEF indicator lamp blinks quickly. (No change from Stage 3)
- The reduced engine power indicator lamp is turned on. (No change from Stage 3)
- The warning buzzers are rung continuously.
- 35 MPH (56 km/h) vehicle speed restriction is changed to 5 MPH (8 km/h) vehicle speed restriction.

At this point, if the DEF of 1.5 gal (1.3 L) or more is added, the warnings are cancelled.

After the DEF is added, make sure that the refill DEF warning lamp, DEF indicator lamp and reduced engine power indicator lamp on the multi-display are off .

Stage 4 (Except 2011 MY)
There are the following 3 types of conditions which advance the Stage 3 warning state to the Stage 4.
- Regardless of the mileage, when the engine is restarted after the ignition is turned OFF.
- When the vehicle is stopped (the vehicle speed being 0 MPH (0 km/h) after driving 5 miles (8 km) to 33 miles (53 km).
- When the mileage reaches 33 miles (53 km). From the Stage 3 warning status, if the driving is continued for another 33 miles (53 km), the restriction vehicle speed is changed even while driving, and the vehicle speed is gradually reduced down to 5 MPH (98 km/h).

When any of these conditions is met, the ECM changes the warning as follows:
- The refill DEF warning lamp is indicated on the multi-display. (No change from Stage 3)
- The DEF remaining level on the multi-display is indicated in Red. (No change from Stage 3)
- The DEF indicator lamp blinks quickly. (No change from Stage 3)
- The reduced engine power indicator lamp is turned on. (No change from Stage 3)
- The warning buzzers are rung continuously.
- 35 MPH (56 km/h) vehicle speed restriction is changed to 5 MPH (8 km/h) vehicle speed restriction. After driving is continued for another 33 miles (53 km) from the Stage 3, the restriction vehicle speed is changed even while driving, and the vehicle speed is gradually reduced down to 5 MPH (8 km/h).

At this point, if the DEF of 1.5 gal (1.3 L) or more is added, the warnings are cancelled.

After the DEF is added, make sure that the refill DEF warning lamp, DEF indicator lamp and reduced engine power indicator lamp on the multi-display are off.

2. DEF Abnormal Quality Warning
The DEF quality inside the DEF tank is managed by the DEF control module through determining whether an abnormality is found in the DEF quality based on the purification rate calculated in accordance with the signals from the NOx sensor 1 and NOx sensor 2. When anything other than the specified DEF is mixed in or the DEF control module determines that the DEF is diluted with water or such, alert is given to the driver with the warning indication on the multi-display, warning lamp in the meter, warning buzzers and vehicle speed restriction. If the exhaust warning lamp comes on, DEF replacement and DEF tank cleaning are required. Below is the table summarizes the content of DEF abnormal quality warnings and vehicle speed restrictions.
