Ignition Control Module: Testing and Inspection

1. Turn ignition switch on.

2. Check power source line voltage by connecting voltmeter positive probe to ignition coil positive terminal and the negative probe to ground. Voltmeter should indicate approximately 12 volts.

3. Check the power transistor in igniter by connecting voltmeter positive probe to ignition coil negative terminal and negative probe to ground. Voltmeter should indicate approximately 12 volts.

4. Check power transistor using a dry cell battery as follows;

a. Disconnect distributor electrical connector, then using a 1.5 volt dry cell battery connect to the terminal as shown in Fig. 2 Do not apply voltage more than 5 seconds to prevent damage of power transistor in igniter.

b. Connect voltmeter positive probe to ignition coil negative terminal and negative probe to ground. Voltmeter should indicate approximately 5 volts.
