Injection Timing Adjust

Fig. 24 Injection pump flange to front plate alignment mark:

1. Check that alignment mark on injection pump flange is aligned with alignment mark on front plate, Fig. 24.

Fig. 2 Timing mark locations.:

Fig. 10 Timing mark location on damper pulley.:

2. Bring cylinder No. 1 to TDC on compression stroke by turning crankshaft until timing mark on pulley aligns with pointer. The damper pulley has eleven notched lines as shown in Figs. 9 and 10. Four lines on one side, seven elsewhere. The four lines are intended for service use while the other seven are for factory use only.

3. Remove upper dust cover, ensure the injection pump belt is properly tensioned and the timing marks are aligned. See Figs. 9, 10, 11, 12.

Fig. 3 Fixing plate installation:

4. Remove the cam cover and rear plug, ensure that the fixing plate fits smoothly into the camshaft rear slit, then remove the fixing plate. See Fig. 13.

Fig. 4 Static timing gauge, J-28827, installed:

5. Disconnect injection pipe from injection pump, then remove distributor head screw and gasket. Install static timing gauge J-28827, Fig. 25. Set the gauge lift approximately .040 inch (1 mm) from the plunger.
6. Bring No. 1 piston to a point 45-60 degrees BTDC by turning the crankshaft, set dial indicator to zero. Turn crankshaft slightly in both directions, ensuring gauge indication is stable.

7. Turn crankshaft in normal direction of rotation until the 12 degree mark on the damper is aligned with the timing pointer, Figs. 10, 11 and 12 Note reading on dial indicator. If reading is not .020 inch (.5 mm), hold crankshaft in position and loosen two nuts on injection pump flange, Fig. 26. Move pump until reading on dial indicator is .020 inch (.5 mm), then tighten nuts.
