Excessive Black Smoke



1. Engine not thoroughly warmed up.
a. Allow engine to warm up.
2. Check air cleaner for restrictions.
a. Clean or replace element as necessary.
3. Check for water or air in fuel filter/water separator.
a. Drain water if necessary.
b. Prime system using fuel filter hand pump, find air source and repair.
4. Check full load adjust bolt seal.
a. Repair as necessary.
5. Check exhaust pipe and muffler for restrictions.
a. Repair or replace as necessary.
6. Check for proper fuel quality.
a. Drain and refill tank with proper fuel.
7. Injection timing.
a. Set injection timing, refer to text under ``Engine.''
8. Faulty injection nozzles.
a. Repair or replace as necessary.
9. Excessive valve clearances.
a. Adjust valves.
10. Low compression.
a. Check compression, repair as necessary.
11. Valve train trouble.
a. Check timing belt and camshaft installation, repair as necessary.
12. Delivery valves.
a. Check delivery valves for sticking.
13. Valve guides and seats.
a. Check condition of valve guides and seats, repair as necessary.
14. Injection pump faulty.
a. Readjust or overhaul injection pump.
