Control Arm: Service and Repair




Removal
1. Raise vehicle and remove wheel.
2. Remove upper brake caliper bolt and slide hose retaining clip back approximately 1/4-1/2 inch.
3. Remove lower shock absorber bolt and push shock absorber upward.
4. Raise lower control arm until level and place support under outer end of control arm.

5. Loosen upper ball joint castle nut until top of nut is flush with the top of the ball joint. Using Tool J-26407-1, disconnect the upper ball joint from the steering knuckle, Fig. 10.
6. Remove through bolt connecting upper control arm to the crossmember.
7. Remove upper control arm


Installation
1. Install ball joint in upper control arm.
2. On installation of the upper control arm, make sure the smaller washer is on the inner face of the front arm and the larger washer is on the inner face of the rear arm.
3. Attach upper control arm to crossmember. Do not fully tighten bolt.
4. Attach upper ball joint to steering knuckle and torque castle nut to 40 ft. lbs.
5. Torque through bolt connecting upper control arm to the crossmember to 43 ft. lbs.
6. Install lower shock absorber bolt. Torque bolt to 29 ft. lbs.
7. Slide hose retaining clip in place and install the upper brake caliper bolt. Torque bolt to 36 ft. lbs.
8. Install wheel and torque to 50 ft. lbs.
