1983 I-MARK DIESEL HARD START/ROUGH IDLE

SERVICE INFORMATION

Under certain temperature conditions, some 1983 I-Mark diesels may start hard and idle rough. White smoke may also be present in some vehicles until idle speed stabilizes.

SERVICE PROCEDURE




In the affected vehicles, the following steps will minimize hard start/rough idle synptoms:

1. Reset the injection pump timing to .55 mm.

2. Replace the Fast Idle System thermoswitch located on the thermostat housing (sec Figure 1) with the new thermoswitch listed below under "Parts Information." Caution: Make sure cooling system is not pressurized before removing old thermoswitch.
3. Advise customers to keep accelerator pedal depressed when starting the engine until engine starts and charge indicator light goes out.
