Injection Pump Timing

Fig. A Diesel Engine Performance Specifications:

Fig. 1 Injection pump flange to front plate alignment mark:

NOTE: Refer to ``Diesel Engine Performance Specifications'' for specified injection pump timing.

1. Check that alignment mark on injection pump flange is aligned with mark on front plate, Fig. 1.

Fig. 2 Timing mark locations.:

2. Bring cylinder No. 1 to TDC on compression stroke by turning crankshaft in direction of rotation until timing mark on pulley aligns with pointer, Fig. 2. The damper pulley has seven to eleven notched lines. Four lines on one side, three to seven elsewhere. The four lines are intended for service use while the other seven are for factory use only.
3. Remove upper dust cover, ensure the injection pump belt is properly tensioned and the timing marks are aligned.

Fig. 3 Fixing plate installation:

4. Remove cam cover and rubber plug, then ensure fixing plate J-29761, Fig. 3, fits smoothly into camshaft rear slit. Remove fixing plate.

Fig. 4 Static timing gauge, J-28827, installed:

5. Disconnect injection pipe from injection pump, then remove distributor head screw and gasket. Install static timing gauge J-28827 Fig. 4. Set the gauge lift approximately .040 inch (1 mm) from the plunger.
6. Bring No. 1 piston to a point 45-60 degrees BTDC by turning the crankshaft, then set dial indicator to zero.
7. Turn crankshaft in normal direction of rotation until the 12° damper mark is aligned with the timing pointer, Fig. 2.

Fig. 5 Injection pump flange nuts:

8. Note reading on dial indicator. If reading is not .020 inch (.5 mm), hold crankshaft in position and loosen two nuts on injection pump flange, Fig. 5.
9. Move pump until reading on dial indicator is .020 inch (.5 mm), then tighten nuts.
